View Full Version : I hate Crowds

Well, it was another crazy weekend in K-Country. All of the campgrounds were full and the highways were nuts and trailheads had cars parked a mile down the highway. We did our annual three-day excursion and we ran into two people...I couldn't believe the crowds.:) We even had a wolf chase an elk through camp one morning and then just about got ran over by a bull moose today with a big black wolf hot on his heels. Add to that a close encounter with a sow and cub grizz (thank gooodness for pack dogs!) and the trails were nuts! Not sure why we fight the crowds every year ;)

What a great long weekend other than taking a ride down a steep snow chute in my shorts. It felt like sliding down 500 feet of sandpaper...lol

Hope everyone else had a great long weekend!

Oh ya, plus we had front row seats for a helicopter rescue of two stranded climbers. That was pretty cool!

Ouch. Ouch. That'll smart for a while.

I always worry when choppers (especially the red-and-whites) fly over when I'm back in the bush, that someone has done something foolish and severely injured themselves. Would be cool to watch the rescue, though.

Ya, don't think anyone got hurt....looked like they just climed into a spot they couldn't get out of. This was fairly early in the day so not sure if they spent a night up there or not. Was some pretty impressive piloting!

Buddy i feel your pain. I hiked into an area like that. I slipped in the wet vegetation and rolled through about 100 feet of devil's club before I hit the snow. My wild ride was not nearly as long as yours, but I had enough damaged hide to last a while.

How were the bugs? Do you treat the dog with bug dope?

Bugs were only bad the final day when we dropped into some lower elevation. Our guy has pretty long hair so the bugs don't seem to bother him too much. We did let him sleep in the tent at night though.

A very eventful few days for sure - plenty of different critters, a helicopter rescue (can't get over what those SAR people do - dangling off a rope hanging from a helicopter - unreal), and a front row seat to the moose and wolf chase. Don't imagine I will get that close to that ever again, the moose was only 10' or 15' from me as he raced past. Poor moose had a chance to make a break for it but that wily wolf got on to him again. It will sure take a while for your arm and leg to heal from that slide ride - crazy how quick something like that can happen, just hiking along and next thing sitting at the bottom of the chute.

LOL...it happened so fast I can't even remember slipping. As I was speeding downhill all I could think about was keeping my feet downhill and trying to stop before I hit the rocks. It's painful but it could have been a WHOLE LOT worse! I got off lucky!

Yep. That's when I learned to always wear an athletic support. The horror of the possible outcome was enough to convince me. Rocks are harder than frog parts.:)

Wow, beautiful pics! How long of a hike was it to get there? We used to go for 3 day hikes in the Wilmore, but the last 2 years it didn't happen and your pics are making me really regret that. Where about are you hiking? Would have loved to see the wolf cahse, wonder if he got em?

I heard of 2 guys that called SAR on their cell phones!
That snow rash looks ugh lee! Best watch out for infection.

My weekend included a 90 Km. bike ride today, so my butt feels like I just gave birth to a 12 lb. square headed kid. Why can't them make a bike seat that doesn't feel like your sitting on the seat tube.

All I heard was 2 guys found themselves in difficulty and realized they had cell coverage so they called 911.

Ha ha I heard your skin gets thinner with old age but wow! I remember that boot ski, but I bet its been like ten years since i did the hike with you guys. Did the shrape pointy rocks slow you down? I spent the weekend working night shifts dealing with drunks and oever dose's then I roofed a house! Looks like a blast anyhow. Any rams? Or none my bus lol!

I started later than the rest, and was making good tracks trying to catch up. Across the pass is this patch of ice and in the middle a slide tracks starts, and goes all the way down. I remember thinking "I'm not sure if that was a good idea", and hurry onwards.

When I caught up (thanks for waiting guys!) I noticed TJ's leg not looking all that spiffy. So after a few minutes I thought I'd better ask. Then he shows me his arm and knuckles and various other parts (nothing indecent though). Having been the victim of two roller ski crashes I cringed! TJ is a tough dude, hiking all that distance and (lack of) trails with that much skin missing!

Sounds like a helluva weekend, Sheep.

Considering the plethora of things that can go 'sideways' above the trees, a little snow rash ain't that bad. Besides.....chicks dig scars. :D

Sounds like a hell of a weekend, lots of fun. Glad to see that you were able to walk out and it wasn't worse. Awesome pictures - thanks for sharing. Watching those guys do a rescue is pretty cool. We got to watch one almost right over head a few years ago on Yamnuska - bad that they have to rescue some one, but good to know that it can be done and we have the professionals in the area to do it. Hats off to them!!!

Did you get any pic's of the wolf chases? Four years ago on an elk hunt north of Hinton I watched 3 wolves, 2 grey's and a black, chasing down a cow elk. The Berlin river was her savior as it was moving a little to fast for the wolves to swim across and well maybe my intervention had something to do with it.

Ya, there's a lot of brown goo under the sterile pads today....I'm thinking it's going to be a few weeks healing! It's not good when a 9"x5" pad barely covers one of the spots...lol Not looking forward to soaking in the tub again today:scared0018:

Great pictures! I especially enjoyed the ones of your camp... Brings back memories of hunting camps past.

And here I was feeling sorry for myself about the condition of my arms after this weekend (falling, hauling and bucking after a wind storm at our church camp property, combined with a short ride earthward embracing a tree...) You've got me beat, TJ! I feel better now... :D

Sorry to say but it just gets worse for a while....

It takes a while for the damaged tissue to die and then the regeneration can begin.

Make sure to give the wound some air.

And you might want to trim the hair off that area ( use scissors on the scrape, a razor for a couple of inches around the scrape). It's gets really bad when the scab pulls on the hair.

On the bright side, this can be looked on as an artistic opportunity.
As the scrape heals, you can manipulate the scarring. I'm thinking you have a large enough pallete to create an image of a WR Bighorn Ram.:sHa_shakeshout:
