Hi There,

I have been fishing in the elbow river and been catching some beautiful fish. I am not sure if they are browns or brooks. Could someone please help me out?

Thanks,

More brookies above the falls. Nice Browns!!! Elbow's got a lot of different regulations for each section. For example you can only keeps browns of that size between hwy 22 and glenmore. I'm sure you know your regs but it can be tricky. Congrats again.

No kidding, what if it was a bull..... if you can't tell the difference between a brown or brook and you're killing them you need to seriously brush up THERE ARE PICTURES IN THE REGULATIONS, along with all the rules perhaps you should pick one up, it's free

In all fairness to the OP....just by the process of elimination he or she could determine it was safe to keep

Nice fish, it's a brown. Nothing wrong with keeping a brown in there, they probably make meals off all the cutts in there so it's good to keep the population of them at bay. That's one of the bigger browns I've seen caught out of there, what did you catch him on if you don't mind me asking?

Brown, no one has posted why though so will do so. Can tell by the tail, brooks have markings on their tails where as brown and yours do not. Know they aren't cutthroats or bows because they have halos around their spots. Not bulls because of markings on dorsal fin.

Further to this, brookies tend to have a very greenish colouring. Also, look for prominent white leading edges on the fins.

Brookies have a sort of "wormy" pattern on their backs and also have purple/blue halos around red spots.

Caught tons of them at Elbow Lake the other day.

I actually caught him (large kype) the night previous on a three inch yellow jig.
Went back the next day and caught him again on a imitation minnow.
Well i was wrestling him a black bear snuck up behind me

Brookies are also a char and not a true trout and, therefore, have white edges leading their fins. Brookies also have obvious vermiculations along their backs.
