View Full Version : First fish on a fly rod (pics)

Stopped on the way home from work tonight to try out my new fly rod. Man do I need to practice a whole lot more!!!! Either way I landed my first fish on a fly rod :sHa_shakeshout:

As a side note, If anyone has any tips to make fish look bigger than they are I'm all ears:sHa_sarcasticlol:

Great pics....isnt fly fishing fun? I love getting a good fish on the fly! Adds a whole new dimension to fishing. Congrats !

Nice job. After I started flyfishing, I rarely use my spin gear anymore. It's an addicting hobby!

Very nice! The most important tip i could give you in fly fishing, you seem to already posses, "taking great photos" for the memories!

Yeah it sure was fun. I think I've definatly found a new passion to add to the list! LOL oh well. Heading up to Magog lake this weekend in Mount Assiniaboine prov park. Hopefully those cutties are just as eagar to take a beginner presented fly! Can't think of a nicer place to practice!

Cuts are awesome for boosting dry fly fishing confidence. Great pics!

Great job !! Not many people can attest to a Perch being their first fish on a fly rod. Heck, most people will never catch a Perch on a fly rod.

LOL I'll admit I think I stacked the odds in my favor by going to that lake, just like other stocked trout lakes someone has put perch in there. :sign0176: and I have to say those things are hungry!
Pardon my ignorance as I am very new to this fly fishing thing but I was using a black nymph of some sort, seemed to work pretty well both fish I caught were within 10 minutes and due to wanting to get home and put my baby girls to bed I could only stay 30minutes. I'll admit a few of those minutes were me tangled in the foliage!!!! :thinking-006:

Was wondering can anyone recommend some flies for an alpine lake that holds cutthroats. I'm heading up to do some fishing and hiking and was wondering what kind of flies I should bring. All I currently have is a cheap starter kit from Home Hardware in town and would like to get some different ones I think.

Most Alpine lakes are ice free for only around 2-3 months in summer so the trout take full advantage of this oppurtunity and will pretty much gobble up any dry fly you put out there. Try Elk hair caddis's, Chernobyl ants, Humpy's and Adams.

No matter where you fly fish try these flies:
Nymphs/streamers:
Wolly bugger
Pheasant tail nymph
Damselfly nymph (this time of year)
Bow river bugger
Dries:
Elk hair caddis
Parachute adams
Smalls grey and black flies
Daves hopper ( this time of year )
