Raccoon and Nutria = vermin

Anyone in Southern Alberta know were to find these varmits.

I've never heard of nutria in Alberta but raccoons can now be found throughout the province.

Nutria are generally found in temperate climates, in the southern US or in coastal waters....

I grew in Taber area. The Racoons are everywhere. We lived @ the end of the Sugar factory lake & they were in there pretty thick in the cat tails & lots of them in the corn feilds at night during the summer. Usually only seen them at night unless the dogs had them treed or pinned down somewhere.

They are absolutely north of Calgary....they are here, they are at Vegreville.......why, why there just EVERY WHERE !! :D

Some have been spotted West of Caroline, Ricinus area and North of Swan lake

A few years back, my partner had some traps scattered around his farm and picked up a raccoon, just north of Westlock.. I don't believe it was near any buildings , just caught in a coyote snare on the fence line as I recall.. I found this quite funny, himself being an older trapper at the time and had never put one up before. So he thought they were finished fur out and had a real sweet time getting it turned. I don't recall what he got for it at the sale. He probably should have had it tanned and kept it around for something to talk--in the good old days..:lol..

Southern River valleys have really high densities of raccoons, as do most of the southern Buck for Wildlife Areas. The other spot they seem to be getting thick in is old farm houses and yards. A friend of mine arrowed one along the Oldman while out deer hunting this fall, i have only seen one during the day, all others at night. It could be a lot of fun if you have coon dogs as there is a lot of them around.

I havent seen nor heard of any west of Edmonton. Would be cool if the dog had something else to chase other than coyotes(she's always got a bullmastiff as back up)

Shot these last fall between Vegreville and Mundare north of Highway 16... 50 years off the road near a bushy fenceline (on what looked a grain spill). I agree, varmin.
