Hello i am here to confirm manswers is right about how fishing is the most dangerous sport :angry3: .Out for an afternoon of fishing with a buddy as we arrive at 6pm to catch some pike it couldnt be better slightly over cast and no wind. As my friend puts his lure on and takes the first cast and hooks into a small pike. I am excited now because the fish are biting and its going to be a good night or so i thought. I carefully removed the hook for him and began to lean over to release the little guy back to the river when suddenly BANG! I dropped the fish and fell in the water "OH NO" i knew what had happened and it wasnt good i pulled myself to shore and in excruciating reached down to feel the knee had popped out of place as i began to panic and figure out what to do next, i straightened the leg and it popped into place in relief i thought all was well and i just needed to relax for ahwile but after 30 minutes of relaxing the pain only got worse. I decided that i better drive one hour home to the hospital just to make sure everything was ok. after the doc checked me over and gave me half a dozen xrays he came back with the verdict. He said i ruptured my patellar tendon and was going to need knee surgery and 6-16 weeks of recovery. As my open water season is most likely over for the year i hope everyone is having great luck and catching a ton. I just wanted to share my story and wish everyone a safe fishing and outdoorsmen season you never know what can happen out there so be prepared. :)

Ah that sucks, rotten luck. Is the a reoccurring thing, or first time? Old football injury?

I have never had it happen and am confused to why it did because i dont even think i bent my kneee funny at all? I really hope it is not a reocurance as i do not know what i will be able to do being out of commision for that long! Pull out the fly vise i suppose. And yes this years hard water should be a good one.

I had the same thing happen.
I didn't care for the attitude of the surgeon I was referred to by my doctor. I asked for a second referral. First guy said surgery without even looking at the knee. he saw the xrays. He also said I would never walk properly and have grief for the rest of my life without surgery.

Second surgeon was a sports specialist. He recommended no surgery. Take it easy and tension bandage. He said either way I would never play pro ball.:)

Difference was with any surgery there is always a risk of things going awry.

I opted for no surgery. took a while to heal. Months. But I was mobile every day. I've had very few issues over the years since then. I made the right decision. Sometimes the surgeons get a little too quick to cut.

Of course your situation could be much different and I'm not recommending you ignore your doctor.

Hope you have a speedy and complete recovery.

As the not so proud owner of a dysfunctional $150,000 knee, I suggest you take this very seriously. Went to two local docs after my injury, who kept saying it was strained, wait a bit, take it easy, tensor etc., two months later after it giving out many times, intense pain, same thing, same advice... I knew it was more than that and finally Went to a specialist who asked for the docs names to report them, said my injury was very bad and very obvious. Cancelled a surgery for an Ed. Eskimo he had in two days because he said it was that bad, may be in a wheelchair for life if I had kept going. Ligaments were destroyed and shrunk. So... he Cut my hamstrings, drilled holes in the bones above and below my knee, threaded my unfolded hamstrings through and screwed them into the bones to hold me together.

Oh, injury was torn acl mcl and pcl, and had to remove 30% of the cartilage on the first surgery (meniscus) and took the rest out on the 3rd. So by the age of 20, i had arthritis, displaced hips which caused a bad back because one leg was doing all the work. Knee is about 30% strength of what it should be, still hurts, limited range of motion, but at least I'm not in a wheelchair. Get it checked, get different opionions if you think necessary. Nothing againsts doctors, but they aren't experts in everything.

I may be joining you in the recovery room soon. I finally got my knee looked at after 4 years of ocassional pain and Dr. Randy Gregg thinks it's a torn meniscus. Now we await the MRI Sep 24th and an appointment with one of his surgeons. Sounds like I'll be going under the knife in Dec.

Get it looked at and take care of it. Mine was an old hockey injury.
