View Full Version : My Grand Slam Ram

gunslinger
09-10-2011, 01:26 AM
Well fellas after 82 days of serious sheep hunting over 7 different trips, i finally connected on probably whats goign to be the biggest ram i will ever harvest.
First and foremost i want to dedicate this ram to my brother Brian "aka monstermuley", When he went on his solo trip he found two rams that were hanging out so he told me where i could go and have a chance, Thanks Buddy.
Secondly to my wife who is the most dearest to me.
This was no trip that i should of taken her on, we loaded up 5 big horses and just me and her went 3 days deep into the mountains to the end of the trail, All by ourselves we packed them horses and rode in.
The first day we climbed up 1600 feet to the high alpine and when Brandie took off her boot i couldnt beleive the size of the blister she had, Tough little girl i will tell you, And all she said was dont worry about it just find a sheep.lol

This time i was not making any mistakes like so many times in the past, walk 30 feet glass, walk 30 feet glass, when after 3 hours of this i walked 30 feet and looked way up high in the rocky craigs and there stood my ram up the ridge looking down at me, instantly i started shaking and the back pack come off, the wife got the video camera rolling and i harvested my ram at 250 yards,
Emotions took over after that and i totally broke down and shook like a leaf, when i walked up to what i beleive is the hardest trophy to harvest i couldnt beleive how big it was, We kissed and hugged and i danced around and im sure the next valley over heard me screaming for joy.
Rocks i want to thank you a million for the horse bells, hobbles, pack saddle, and all the info you gave me, i can never repay you man.

My wife can hardly move after the horse ride out and has bruises all over her body, Im going to soak my feet as they are worn to the bone.

Well done slinger. I'm willing to bet that this was WITHOUT A DOUBT,the most rewarding hunt of all of them. Nothing like walking up to a big ram

Oh man i literally have hunted my butt off on this animal, 4 different zones, i bought 3 horses just to hunt sheep, and horse trailer, tack, and was just snake bitten on the rams, i would leave to go resupply and my buddies would kill a ram that next day, that happened three times to me, i left for 4 days once and come back and there was 2 rams on the picnic table, lol, one of them ones where you think its never going to happen.

i have been had alot of rushes go through me but the rush that went through me when i seem him fall was like no other, Hes really old too.

You have got that right, we have watched the video about 10 times today as the house has been full all day, This video will hit the air waves whenever it does and i hope you all dont pm me and say what a little girl i am, actually its pretty wild what adrenaline will do, i start shaking like a leaf and then run for a bit, then come back grab my gun again the jack the bolt open, then say oh my god 5 times, then shake more, then it really hit home. my wife started crying and it all just broke down for a few minutes.
It was the most unreal feeling i think ive ever felt.

I am still rubbing momma back and legs after that trip, with the big blister she had on her feet she wasnt able to get off the horses for three days and had to ride all the way out , where i walked alot of it, oh man i felt sorry for her but she toughed it out.

We bought that locally , it is rosewood and they made me pay for it alright, the only bad part of it is if you dont keep the room at a good humidity it shrinks pretty bad, but yea its a gorgeous table , looks good in all the mounts too. We found it at mameo beach

But first let me take you back 5 trips and tell you how it all began, Both my brothers have already shot bighorn rams but I just couldn’t connect on finding a legal ram.

1.Trip 1 was a total learning experience I think I actually broke or lost every single piece of sheep hunting equipment I owned, and I really learnt a lot about how horses can affect a good hunting trip,Broken rifle, broken tripod, lost gps, lost headlamp, lost rainsuit and of course no sheep.

2. Trip 2 was a backpack trip and that went well until I was almost physically drained and couldn’t see across the valley with my old 8x 42.

3. Trip 3 was a lot better and now I had a sworovski spotting scope with some good binos and im ready for sheep hunting. That was until the all mighty sheep gods decided to send me down 5 trails that had no end to them and a couple very lost and confused hunters, Oh yea and then he decided to do what most sheep hunts hold and pour rain and snow down on us until you could hardly feel your fingers, I had about 40 days in the mountains by this time with actually not even having a chance at seeing a ram let alond killing one, But I was told this is the hard times that one has to pay to kill a bighorn ram.

In the meantime I was fortunate enough like most to began with killing the stone sheep then went for the dall sheep two weeks later and finally once the recession hit I was able to afford the desert sheep, so as I sat at ¾ slam it was home province ram that I just couldn’t seem to catch up on.

4.Trip 4 I was turning the corner on my number 23 animal on route to the north American 29 when my wife suggested I just hire a outfitter and he can show us the ropes and take us deep into sheep country with a ton of experience, so that’s what I did, August 25 rolled in and we started searching , 7 days , 14 days, 21 days, 28 days, 37 days go by and I still haven’t seen a legal ram, Oct 31 came fast that year and once again I ate tag soup.

2011 That was all about to change when my brother Brian did the unthinkable, he packed up 2 big Yukon horses and travelled three solid days to the end of the trail deep in the heart of the Alberta mountains by himself.

2nd day of his hunt he shot a great ram way up high on a ridge. After packing up the ram he got turned around and with all the mental and physical wear on him he accidentally ventured 16 km downstream from camp. But in the meantime he spotted what he thought were two more big rams high up in a basin tucked in behind some bluffs.

I quickly researched the area and told my wife I have to go alone because I cant find anyone to go with me,

Brandie says well you are not going alone im coming with you that’s too dangerous, 2 days later found us heading west on the trail with 5 horses loaded up with camp and tons of food, I was staying in till I found the rams.

I had all the gps coordinates from brian who had just come out three days prior, so getting there wasn’t too bad, and when we come around the corner to where he was you could just tell it was sheep country, high big rocky mountains.

That next morning Brandie and I left our spike camp with water bottles and light packs, it was going to be a day trip up a steep ridge then slowly glass our way to the back of a bowl where I thought the rams would be.

When we got to the top brandie took her boot off to find she had a blister about the size of my thumb, She looked up at me and said , Just find a ram.

I knew I was in the zone so I would hike 30 yards glass, Hike 3o yards glass, hike 30 yards glass, this was my plan so I could really take my time and make sure I wasn’t going to spook anything,

Then all of a sudden , boom there the big old ram was looking down at me from high above, the ram of a lifetime, his dark ,big old broomed off horns were clearly legal and massive

I quickly threw my pack off and loaded the 300 Remington ultra mag ,Brandie settled in steady with the video camera , I layed the Leopold 4.5 x 14 crosshairs right on his shoulder and slowly squeezed off and with one smack of the 165 grain hornady the old warrior dropped in his tracks .
Oh my god , Where is he babe, Where did he go, I don’t know I lost em, There he is hes down, Hes down babe, We got a ram, we got em babe , we did it, grand slam.
I
quickly became overwhelmed and began shaking uncontrollably, My breath was taken away my arms went numb , I cant beleive I finally was able to shoot my grand slam ram.

80 days of straight sheep hunting over 5 trips and we finally had my ram, way up high in the most gorgeous country you could ever imagine. The grand slam tears starting rolling and I thanked my brother Brian for spotting me a ram of a lifetime , if it wasn’t for him I would still be searching for one.

As I walked up on the ram I couldn’t believe the huge mass and big broomed off curls , They were the biggest I have ever held, he had 15 inch bases and he was 34x34 , with a gross score of 161 total inches.

I absorbed the moment as long as I could ,We took great photos and then had the rest of the day to pack him off the mountains, me and my wife never laughed and played so hard on that mountain as we did that day with my ram in our packs.

I would like to dedicate this hunt and ram to my brother brian and to my wife Brandie who ventured so deep in the mountain on such big horses in search of that ram, Thanks to the sheep gods for finally allowing me to finish the grand slam and for relighting the fire inside that we sheep hunters like to call THE SHEEP BUG.

Good story Pat, only thing I would critique you on would be tying the first 2 trips together a bit more, like how you did the last 3. They had a bit more "flow" to them, where the first 2 were kinda short, and drama-less. Other wise I enjoyed reading it, thanks for sharing...:D
