I was showing my boy different cartridges that his Grandpa had from over the years. There was one cartridge marked L S 5 4 . It is almost identical to the 270 cartridge. Anyone familiar with this marking?

Not LC as in Lake city Arsenal. 30/06 military headstamp if it is, man. 1954

Grab a vernier and measure the case and the diameter of the bullet....should get you close. As was suggested could be a military round of an older .30-06 factory load.

I am not real familiar with re-loading or specs for that matter. I also had a 30/06 cartridge to compare. To the eye it was closer to to the 270. Could a 06 casing be re-tooled for the different cal.?

Yes for sure....the .30-06 is the parent case for several different chamberings .270 Winchester and the .25-06 being 2 of them....

Thanks guys, this has been very interesting to me. 1954 eh? That's kind of funny.

Yup, gotta be careful with reloads; what it says may not always be...

I have a .260 Remington I'm using 7-08 brass for because the real .260 stuff is somewhat more difficult to find.
