OK so the boat was full of bankers but we had a real good time on the cruise. While in Cozumel we booked a fishing trip and wouldn't you know in the last five minutes Sandi whacks a beauty Sail. The remarkable thing about this was the sailfish don't show up until April! I've got used to this sort of thing happening with Sandi though. Oh ya after 10 days my liver was squealing by Friday!

Well tell Sandi congrats on that nice looking sailfish.
Did it give her a good fight?
How long did it take to land?
Did you catch any other fish?

Good to hear that there maybe a few in the area. I am headed there next month.
Like you said, generally in that area the best sailfish fishing isn't till April. Last February we got lucky and managed to hook 11 sailfish in one morning

Rocky it took her 20 minutes to land, one of the other ladies caught a grouper and the other was broke off by a wahoo. Sandi had to drink right handed for days after, her left arm was so sore from pumping the rod.The crew was astounded to catch a sail in January. The other 2 charters didn't have a single bite. We were off the Playa Mia resort.

Hey 209,
More than likely I am guessing you didn't have it out of the water too long, and probally through it back. Maybe???
Did they give you a guesstimate on weight and length?

Awesome...........looks like a great one for an Atlantic Sailfish. Hopefully one day, I'll get a chance at one of those.

Rocky, it was catch and release. Martin and Rico figured the fish at 80-90 pounds and I know it was over 8 feet long, a fair bit of that is the snout..

Congrats on the wicked lookin fish. Curious but if the sailfish dont show up till April why would u book a fishing trip for them and why would the outfitter offer fishing for them, or were you fishing for other fish as well or do a few still stick around and the fishing just picks up in April?

The outfitter said we had a chance at Wahoo, Baracuda and Dorado. You fish for all these fish the same way using Ballyhoo and teasers

Was there any word of anyone catching Dorado?
Any ideas where from Cozmel you were fishing?

Thanks

We were to the SW off Paradise Beach. The other two charter boats that took people from our cruise ship didn't have a bite so I don't think things were going well right then. Today, tomorrow, who knows right? Its fishing!

Exactly with your "today, tomorrow" comment. Heck how many time does the hour of the day make the world a difference.
I am not headed there for another four weeks so things could drastically change by then.

I am not sure if I will go fishing this year or not. A Dorado sure would be a nice addition to my list of saltwater fish.
