I went 6 hours north of Saskatoon this past weekend to fish tigers and splake. The weather was fantastic and the fishing was equally as awesome. I caught over 70 tigers and splake saturday, I could not keep them off my hook! http://www.outdoorsmenforum.ca/picture.php?albumid=906&pictureid=3622

sorry for all of you that don't like seeing dead fish - they are sterile hybrids and are stocked to be kept. They taste fantastic by they way...

they are a hybrid made by crossing a brook trout with a brown trout

Splake is a laker and a specked trout right? I can't guess what a tiger is. One looked like it had some char.

One also looked like a spec.

tiger = female brown and male brook trout
splake = female lake trout male brook trout

you can make splake from female brook trout as well, but larval survival is low.

Splake are fertile hybrids and can successfully spawn while tigers are sterile.

Nice Fish, Tyree! Tigers and splake have been on my bucketlist for a while, but I don't think there's much of an opportunity to find them in Alberta.

Looking forward to more pictures.

Spent an entire day trying to catch a tiger trout a few years back. Caught one fish all afternoon (but I'll never forget it) on a tom thumb and it was a splake. Can't remember the name of the lake but it was up around little bear lake but a little further south as I remember. Your pictures are the first tigers I've seen and it makes me want to try again. Congratulations and thanks for sharing. Rick.

I'd argue that the spirit of Saskatchewan's fish stocking program is to create recreational sport fishing opportunities where none existed before, or to enhance the populations of marginal fisheries, rather than simply provide another source of meat.

I don't think you need to make excuses for keeping a few fish, but citing the old school "put-and-take" reasoning just propagates a lack of respect for our stocked waters. I think you agree somewhat, because for a lake where the fish are supposedly there to be killed and eaten, you're being a bit coy about it's location (probably Mullock on highway 102) both here and on the Sask forum. Not particularly offended by your comments, I just find them ironic coming from someone who's generally very protectionist about the waters he fishes.

Nice fish by the way, love tigers. Always curse that we don't have any freestone rivers with native/wild trout (lakers aside) in Sk, but at least we have some interesting hybrids. And yes, they taste great, especially through the ice about 5 minutes after they were caught.

Thanks for the comments. I hope what I said does not promote a lack of respect for our stocked waters, they are mostly what I fish here. The lake is indeed Mullock lake and my reasoning for the comment was geared towards the province overstocking this lake with fish, and also stocking with sterile hybrids. These fish grow slow in this lake because there is hardly any natural feed for them, and year classes are separated by an inch o less, and there is no opportunity for a trophy fishery.

Thanks for your comments - and we absolutely have a freestone river with populations of, now wild, brook trout and possibly cutties still. PM me if you are interested.

Hey Rick,
that lake is called Burtlien and it can be tough at times. If you are ever in that area again, and would like to give it a go, Let me know and I can give you some tips and also let you know where they are biting.
