I'd like to get back into target shooting after many years of absence. I previously owned a Ruger M77 22-250 heavy barrel and got some great groups with it.

I'm interested in feedback and comments on the following options for a rifle:

1. Savage 12 BVSS
2. Browning X-Bolt Varmit Special

Accuracy is my primary goal and I'll reload the ammunition. I'm thinking I'd go with 223 this time instead of 22-250.

Most of my shooting will be at 300 meters or less at the range I go to. I anticipate the occasional gopher hunting trips.

I'd like to keep my rifle cost under $1000.

Any other rifle or caliber choices I should consider?

The Savage VLP can be purchased for $719 at Bashaw Sports. One of those in 223 would be a good choice.

If you want serious accuracy and the option to customize to your hearts content, you cannot beat a Remington.

I don't think that you can go wrong either way, although I'm more familiar with the Savagess than Browning.
