280AI. Nosler makes factory ammo now. Picked some up at Cabelas.

284s are only good if you handload. They were clambered in a bunch of weak actions so the factory loads are way backed down. Mines killed elk, moose and deer no problems. Also. Built on a short action you lose to much case capacity shooting anything over a 140. If I could choose I would have a 280 ai for sure. Little bit easier for finding brass.

What actions were they chambered in that were weak?
The 100, the 88?

Crap, those in particular were chambered in 308 and 243, both cartridges that are pretty high pressure for their size.
The danged cartridge was designed for short actions, and does not lose a whole bunch on case capacity, but it was also designed to shoot the 140's anyway.
I wouldn't buy one on general principal, simply because i would rather neck it down to 6.5/284.
That all being said, I doubt if there is a single cartridge out there built that is head and shoulders above anything else being made at this time - EXCEPT for the favourite of the person who owns it!:)

7 mm Rem. Mag :D .284, but faster, more powerful and versatile. Local store has rounds if you're not into hand loading. My no. one choice for decades and No regret.

7x64 Brenneke.

Tikka, Sako, CZ, Blaser, Sauer and others chamber for it (almost all Euro makers do, its super popular there, even Remington did a run in the 90's). Equivalent to the .280Rem, great round and has some kool factor.

Now if he can find it in a classic old BRNO 21 he will be uber cool!

easy on the shoulder, supremely accurate (now that's uber kool) and will knock down anything you want to shoot at within 200 yards. Or you can give it a bit of HP and even more uber koolness by rolling the barrel to Ackley Improved. Same can be said of the 6.5 Swede. Add in all the combinations if you were to handload - and these two calibers alone will soak up hours of research and time at the firing range. Of course you could pick an '06 too!

Yes, very sexy.I have one in a BRNO 21H with double triggers and a butterknife bolt handle.Three in one hole with either 140gr or 160gr.Very surgical.I handloaded a Savage lever for a buddy years ago in .284 and it shot great with H-414 which is the same as Win 760 and the 140gr............Harold

6.5/284 or 260 Rem or 6.5x55 Swede. Build a custom rifle around one of these three cartridges and you'll never regret it. Since building my 260, my 7RM stays at home other than my two trips for PG.

So far almost all the talk has been about cartridges.

What kind of rifle is he interested in?

A bolt action or lever action or single shot or a semi-auto? Does he like the look and feel of a nice piece of wood for a stock or does he like stainless and synthetic?

Some time back I had a yen to buy a winchester Model 100 semi-auto. My cartridge choices were limited of course to .243, .308 and .284.
I found and bought one in .284 and then awhile later bought one in .308.

The Savage Model 99 is a classic rifle. I bought one in .300 savage (a classic cartridge). I would not have bought a different rifle in .300 savage. It was the combination of rifle and cartridge I wanted.

1200 2130 50.7" 1713 1.331

Recommended Uses: The 270 Allen Magnum was designed specifically for the use of hunting medium big game in the 200 to 600 pound class. The 270 A.M. is also the first APS wildcat that offered legit +1000 yard effective range on medium big game animals as it sustains over 1 ton of kenetic energy at 1000 yards. It also retains up to 2300 fps at this range which ensures full bullet expansion and energy transfer. The 270 A.M. is a true all around performer. Its just as at home in a lightweight sporter rifle for packing all day in rough country and hunting out to 700 yards, or as a medium weight rifle for dedicated long range precision big game hunting. While the barrel life of the 270 Allen Magnum is dramatically longer then its smaller Allen Magnum siblings, its still not recommended to use this wildcat as a high volume varmint chambering.

Effective Range: With commerical bullets, the 270 A.M. is best used at ranges from zero to 800 yards on medium size game. For elk hunting it is recommended that range be limited to no more then 600 yards with conventional commerical bullets. Using the 169.5 gr ULD RBBT from Wildcat Bullets, the 270 Allen Magnum offers legit +1200 yard range on medium to heavy deer species and 1/2 mile range on elk size targets.

Pros: Very easy to form brass for, formed brass available through APS with rifle orders, Extremely potent ballistic and terminal performance. Decent barrel life for performance level. Fits in Rem 700 receivers easily and its custom clones.

Cons: Commerical bullets really limit the 270 A.M.s performance potential. Custom 169.5 gr ULD RBBT not easily obtained from Wildcat Bullets but it is still listed as a production item. Relatively limited choice in reloading powders

I have used a number of different actions/stock/barrel combinations; all have made me smile at the range. Best answer: it depends on personal preference. To date all exceptional shooters are bolt guns - but I have real itch for a superb single shot. It would be in either 6.5 swede and its grown up cousin the 7x57. Wood or plastic - only accurate guns stay in the safe. (or go for walks in the woods)

Not too many 45 70s out there ,I have one and I like it . I used it for the first time last year on my WT buck and it killed it very well .It was easy to track after too because it never took a half a step. I was surprised at the amount of damaged meat too. My 308 caused a lot more damage than that 45 70. If he wants to step away from the ordinary ,that's one option.

I am also pro .45-70, the big slower moving slug seems to cause less meat damage but the tissue shock drops them right where they are
