Did you happen to go down to the shoreline at Mac to see if the whites are in the shallows yet? Was thinking of heading down there today but got tied up. I'm probably going to try on Friday.

Remember last year when you caught that Rainbow at Mac, was that near the launch? I always thought that the canal came out beside the launch but last weekend I discovered that wasn't the case.

I am heading down to work at our Lethbridge location this morning and coming back tomorrow. If I get done early I may take the back road home and maybe slide across the Milo rd and see what things look like there if I am making some good time. I am hoping to be done by noon so may have some time to slide over.

checked out 3 reservoirs yesterday, Newell is icing up in the bays around the south east end. Rolling Hills is icing around the inlet, and Scope is freezing up along the dam

Saturday morning McGregor had ice in a channel "delta", but not on the lake side, The very last small "bay" had some broken up ice at the water edge. Dam was ice free at sun rise. BUT my car outside temperature gauge showed -20C on the way there @~7:30 that shoud help ice grow

I didnt go to the shoreline around the launch. I did right where the shore meets the dam but it was iced over so I couldnt see through it. Along the dam I couldnt see much. The water was pretty milky.

Last year when I caught that rainbow I was directly out from the launch probably 40 feet. It is still pretty far from where the canal comes out. Yesterday when I was there I drove along the canal from the drop structure all the way to the weir and it was frozen except at the structures and I couldnt see any fish passing through the channel.

With Thursdays forecast of plus 9 with rain/snow mix, I've a feeling that the precious first ice will be overweighted, sink and melt, or make slush ice at shore,, Fridays forecast isn't going to help the ice much either,,, well at least some days of rod action can't hurt. The longterm forecast doesn't look very promising for really nice long days and nights of sub-sub-sub zero temps.

I'm praying for clear skies and minus 20 for a month with moderate wind.

Just got in from spending the last few days in Lethbridge. Didn't get a chance to drive to the reservoirs but the river did not look very iced up and it was warm and breezy today so maybe waders may be better than ice gear for a while yet.

Press play on this satellite image, though it will be updated on the hour,, thing is, the weather channel fudged on where the pacific disturbance was moving and if you look at Idaho or S Alberta, the system is pulling a lot of warmth northward. Or better yet, check the wind direction for lomond then milo,, the towns are only 40 kliks apart. I'll post Macgregor and maybe Travers pics tommorow night.

Did I miss an overnight storm? Weather People are hopeless. Anyhoo, No ice at MacGregor and what hard puddles there were, were as annoying as a stick in the ocean, you could've dropped a boat in at Milo, wind moderate till noon. No ice at Badger, inlet still fishable, check for wind it was very difficult to stand. No shore ice.
Picture from threabouts the boat launch at Milo towards the dam;

Forgot to mention, If you go to badger and the wind is from the NW, go to the west side inlet,,, if wind from West, fish off the building, it's weird but the head on west wind of 40kmh feels like 10kmh,, however if it's a SW wind, fish the southwest causeway, threabouts 200 yards from the corner. There was ice, 1 inch thick that the wind, waves and warmth receded about 20 feet in 3 hours. The lake is open spare maybe a tennis corts worth of ice, fish from shore unless you like kite surfing.

Don't try driving the old road beyond the boat launch at MacGregor, I walked it and saw fresh 4x4 tracks and it looks like they sunk pretty good at one point. For those who fish off the point, you can walk it.

Went to PCR today for couple hours, no ice at all, caught two burbot and over 20 small walleye:angry3:...burbot could not get to the bait, anytime it sunk to the bottom in few seconds there was walleye attacking it. And since you can't fish after sunset till December it sucked as there was no way to avoid those small hungry walleye. I wish they would never stock them in PCR :mad3:
There is a picture of muskrat who kept me company.

Heading out tomorrow to Mcgreagor. Anyone knows ice thickness?

I'm going to make an educated guess, being that I was there last Friday and it was completely ice free,,, I would suggest testing the ice from shore not from the dam. stay about 6 feet away from the dam. If you want whites, they are shallow, safest would be 100 yards South of the boat launch, max 30 from shore,, bring plywood to disperse your weight,,, if water comes up and on the ice move closer to shore, 3 feet or less of water is plenty enough to fish.

The Red Deer river had many ice pieces floating down early, early this morning and some buildup of ice along the shores near Red Deer. The ice floating down the water was similar to the ice in Waynes' pictures of the Bow at the beginning of this thread.

Glenmore is a good gauge to use to know how the surrounding lakes are doing.

MacGregor has increased to 3-4 inches of solid clear ice as of today along the dam. Amazing what -20 can do

I think the whites are a little later than last year for coming into the shallows. There were about a dozen people on the lake today and most people seemed to only get one or two for the day. The water is still extremely murky compared to last year so I'm assuming it should clear up for sight fishing in the next few weeks.

Managed two big whites though, one had something take a big bite out of it's tail but was still healthy.

Wednesday, Nov 23- 10°C/ 2°C

Figured I'd copy/paste this that I just wrote on another thread but with the addition,,, if your ice has been 4 inches/clear and better, you're probably ok with the chinooks but

This is just my opinion on what to expect from Southern Reservoirs (South of Calgary) by guessing what people were saying about the Ice at MacGregor at 1.5inches to what we witnessed yesterday. We were fishing a private pond that had good clear and 7 inch ice,, though a small dug out and tree lined, the wind played on the lake ice like a diaphram with the usual expansion pops and moans. We had seven holes cut and the wind caused a consistent up and down welling of the water. So my guess is, with the larger rez's plus the warmth and these pretty hefty winds, it may look like a continuual sheet but my guess is that it's really a bunch of little sheets and not worth venturing on unless you are in shallow water, sprite on foot and know the water well,,, bring extra socks, pants and a blow torch and a bundle of wood.
Be super careful, the ice is expanding rapidly.

Yesterday on the way to Red Deer I noticed that any standing water in sloughs, etc had a layer of water on top of the ice.

Any ice in deeper water than a slough is more than likely melting from not only the bottom upward, but the surface downward also. Getting it from both directions.

Our fishing gang is gonna try travers and mcgreggor on friday Nov 25. We'll let everyone know if long rods will be enough? We're sure hoping most of the ice is melted by then! Post a message up if anyone has been by there in the last few hours just so we are not wasting our time :). Thanks

Haven't been out yet but I'm planning on going out the 1st weekend in december I think. I'm hoping that the one good thing coming out of this chinook is melting the snow on the ice so that it freezes better. Unfortunately it is also melting the snow on land as well which it would be nice if it stayed around for hunting.

Walked my dog by a local city "lake" yesterday - think I might need a longer rod... Half of surface de-iced and it's being frozen for a while before any real lake was. So sad to see my new Eskimo just sitting in a garage :(

I took a few casts under the bridge on the highway at the south end of Mac on thursday afternoon. Ice was purple and rotten along the causeway and melting in the wind. No way I would go out on it. Was surprised to get checked by CO apparently he caught someone snagging whitefish there the previous week. He said they had snagged 55 whites under the bridge. Shameful, and some wonder why fishing isn't as good as it used to be.

Jacen is a reliable apparent status,,, though I'd never say that to his face,, not that there's anything wrong with being an apparent status,, I'm sure one day he will be a full fledged status but in the interim, I'm not sure it's politically correct to point out his apparentness.

I didn't ask but it's funny, I was just thinking of how to circumnavigate the walleye for the burbs,,, bigger bait,,, try a strip of squid just off the bottom,,, jace jigs for'em,, or get the pre-cleaned headless smelt and stuff a smaller smelt tail first then prong the hook and cast, you wont even need a weight.

Was on McGregor yesterday, interesting, but in the bays ice is better than last saturday - really nice 4 inches of clear blue ice, but where it was broken by the wind it'e really thin - one has to be really careful. Didn't see much whites there though. Managed one later on a summer rod.
How is the dam, did ice survived?

Just got back from Mcgregor. The ice is good...actually better then last weekend! We were on the dam and the ice was about 3" thick...where WE were...use caution as always:).
The wife had a few bits and managed 1 with help...but I didn't get a nibble:mad0030:. Oh well, we had fun and stayed dry.
The wind is bad down there coming from the south

The wind is found and at the worst place possible,,, actually, a north wind rolls over the dam too,,,, how shallow were you fishing?

Just got back from white hunting, I drilled a test hole out by a weedbed maybe 30 feet from shore, 8 inches thick. Oh and for those people asking what they need for ice fishing gear? number ONE "CLEATS"!!!!!!!! going to be fun trying to walk tomorrow, but it was worth it. And if you are missing the wind Gus, it didnt start til about noon, and it started like a dragster, zero to 100 in 4 seconds flat! no way you could walk out on the main lake without cleats, you go 4 steps back for every one forward. :angry3:
