Well a trip for whites is coming up, when night falls should I switch over to the glow jigs to catch burbot coming shallow to eat whitefish eggs?

When the whitefish are spawning, the burbs are usually active through the day. I've had little luck getting them at night during white spawning.

I've seen them swim amongst the packs of whites, they seem to ignore each other.

one thing to add..... Burbs have real good snouts and like stinky
bait. so....... if your using a Jig... get one of the power bait type
plastics to hang on it...

it may get you a few more nibbles...

best of luck......

ps; Burbs are evidence that Jackfish " ^&%$ " snakes....

My fav for burb is a glow tube jig, filled with a smelt.
1. I pull back the tube and rig the smelt like I was just going to rig it
2. Pull the tube back over the smelt
3. Rip off most of the dangly bits of the smelt(darn those short strikers)

We've caught several daytime burbs and not one on an overnighter last week. The burbs were caught in about 8 feet of water not far off shore, maybe 60'. Casting for them may be possible till Monday in the south, not sure what north of calgary is like out there though.

Yup, this is how we did it at the cottage years past. I didn't have a 2x4, or nail, or time to play in the dark today.

Of interest from wiki:

the liver of the burbot has 3 to 4 times the potency in vitamin D, and 4 to 10 times in vitamin A, than “good grades” of cod-liver oil. The vitamin content varies in Burbot from lake to lake, where their diet may have some variation. Additionally, the burbot liver makes up approximately 10% of the fish's total body weight, and its liver is six times the size of those of freshwater fish of comparable size. Ted also found in his research that the oil is lower in viscosity, and more rapidly digested and assimilated than most other fish liver oils

very cool

burbot livers dramatically increase fur quality in foxes, I'm hoping it'll make my hair grow back. fingers crossed.

So jealous! It's been almost a year since I last had burbot liver. Never got the chance to go out this fall for them. Cut them into small slices, salt and pepper in a dry cast iron pan, DROOL..........

So, I just filleted them like normal and cut the skins off no problem at all.

2 fish is a lot of meat for 1 man.

Had to clean 20 one night last year and found it easier to skin without a knife and pliers.
Use your fingers to get under the "ears" to start and then paper towel once you started the skin
They are really tasty and everybody liked them, but now we have no more than 5 per person limit enforced in the family

Good guess, it's Finnish. There's a lot of interesting fish cleaning videos there.

They really need to bring the limit down on them, 3 is more than enough food with a good sized one. And Beeguys is the longest I've seen in ages, nice colours too. lots of people call them catfish like but if you watch videos of burbs, they aren't as lumbering as one would think, quite stealthy.

How do you cook the liver?

A liver that size, I would make cuts to it an inch apart,,, but just like good calf liver,,, nice hot skillet and salt and lots of black pepper then eat on a nice firm, dark rye bread,,,, maybe some Russians can offer another recipe.

Burbot are freshwater cod.

I like cod, and I really enjoy burbot.

Firm white meat.

Man you are slaying these burbot. You ice-fishing already? If so, I am extremely jealous... heck I'm extremely jealous regardless, I haven't gotten a chance to wet a line in weeks now. Are you getting them on minnows?

BeeGuy

Nope, just shore fishing.

I bet they would take any bait.

Damn I keep trying to get out this fall for burb fishing since it gets dark so fast but things seem to get in the way. Do you ever go out during the weekday BeeGuy? Was thinking I should try to get out Tues or Wed before the snow hits later this week.

Typically at this time of year I do fairly well on Burbot at Ghost Lake. I recall my best evening @ 6 fish in 3 hours all on frozen shiners. The water was slush by the time we packed up and the lake had a thin layer of ice about a week later. The biggest one I pulled out of there had 2 whole rocky mountain whitefish in its gut.

ak-71
11-14-2011, 03:14 PM
Sorry for a stupid questions, but what is shiners, are they "bait fish" and where do you get them?

The minnows in a tub from CT work fine and stay on the hook better than smelts.

Minnows do fall into a "bait fish" - no go at Ghost, right?

Alexey

Ghost Reservoir
Open all year – Trout limit 5; Mountain Whitefish limit 5 over 30 cm; Bait allowed. (see General Regulations)

11-14-2011, 03:59 PM
my bad, you are right :Fishing with Bait Fish (dead) is NOT allowed in ES1 except at the following waters:
...
•Ghost Reservoir
...
Thought somebody posted about being ticketed for minnows on Ghost - my mistake. I am going to try it later in a season - never fished there before

BeeGuy
11-14-2011, 06:06 PM
I believe the minnows in the tub at CT are regarded as smelts.

Ghost is now 75% ice/snow covered.

ak-71
11-14-2011, 06:58 PM
They sell both, but I like SuperStore for smelts better.

The cleaned smelts for human consumption are fantastic, you can even stuff a soggy smelt in the edible one then push your hook thru both and clip to your leader and you're good for the day, though you have to make a little cut in the cleaned smelt where the hook is, so the hook can break free and hook the fish. they last forever

I went with beeguy tonight. It literally was freezing infront of our eyes. The crackling of the ice was an experience. Neat to see mother nature solidify a massive body of water infront of you. Little does she know, we seek revenge on the rogue fish who stole the bait this evening.

I'm guessing then with below zero temps all day tomorrow that one last open water outing is futile. Did you guys have any luck?

Definitely futile. We fished the last few hours of open water. It is over.

No luck, may have had some baits stolen. Might switch up from circle hooks to dirty gut hooks.

Might be able to get them through the ice next week!

It'll be nice to use 2 rods while set-lining.
