View Full Version : Typical or Non Typical?

My last chance buck! He has 4 typical points on right antler, Left antler has 6 points, with a 9 6/8 G2 pointing backwards off the main beam and a 2 4/8 drop tine coming off the back of the main beam. I know the drop tine counts as a non typical point, but does the backward facing G2 count? Would this deer be scored on a typical or non typical scoresheet? Tip to tip spread is 26 4/8.
I was coming into one of my favorite "gotta be a buck here" sites Monday morning when I stepped on a twig and heard deer getting up. I quickly grabbed my call and grunted several times. Immediately I heard movement ahead of me just over a small creek bank. I found myself kind of exposed with no real cover around. I stood a still as possible while scanning the bush ahead and heard a snort to my left. I couldn't see any movement, and called again gently to see if I could get a response. Over my right shoulder, in a spruce grove full of blowdowns, I heard a twig break, and glanced over to see this deer walking towards me. I turned to face him, got him in my scope at 50 yards headon, settled the crosshairs at the base of his neck and pulled the trigger. 10 minute hunt after getting to my spot.

Congrats on the nice buck! It sounded like a fun hunt. I can't comment on how to score it though.

cool rack. I don't know either about T or NT

The buck looks like a typical 4x4 with two NT points on the left antler. The point you are questioning does not come off the top of the main beam.

Regarding entery in to the B&C book, if it qualified, YOU get to choose which score would be entered, typical or NT. So, take your pick. :)

That would be a 4 x 5 with trash in my books. Congrats nice buck

I would likely classify the long backward point as a non-typical point. Hard to say for sure when looking at pics but it looks pretty clear to me.

Very nice 4 point!! you have to have more than 9% of total score to be non-typical .. and any point over 1 inch is scoreable.drop tine/ splits and extra points are deductions ,along with circumference of horns and antler length difference's on each side.. yours looks ok:)

I would score that buck as a typical! Basically because you would scorehim both ways and he would score better percentage wise (compared to the Alberta minimum, or Boone and Crockett) as a typical.

thats my view as well. of course, as said, the owner does have the choice to go whichever way he likes for the scoring groups. i know there are some local trophy shows that have their own rules regarding it too though.

Anyone good at aging deer by tooth wear?
Here's some pics of the jaw bar.
Give me your guess and why you think so.

Nice deer for sure .. I figure most anybody on here would be proud of him . Think the score is going to be a little disappointing tho , I'd just enjoy him for the character and uniqeness .Congrats.

Local antler measuring day today. Had him scored typical and non typical.
Typical score - 122
Non Typical score - 144
Concensus of several of the scorers at event is it is a non typical rack.

How many inches in nt points? Assuming yours scores are net, 11?

BigRackLover
02-04-2012, 08:51 PM
I think the rule of thumb if the NT points add up to 10 inches or more, it's scored NT.

P&Y is now states half the difference between book min is the cut off. B&C does not state, but it will score better to percent minimum of book score as a typ, if the 11 is correct. 170 typ to 195 nt, 12.5 nt breaking point.

Approx 12 2/8 inches of nontypical length by my calculations.

then your scores dont make sense.....maybe post the numbers for clarification. 12 2/8 would make a 24 4/8 diff in scores.

As stated, by my calculations.
I didn't get a chance to see event score sheet. Just had scores on masking tape on rack when time to pick up. I measured drop tine at 2 4/8, and back pointing tine at 9 6/8. Not sure what they measured them at.

I'm thinking it must be 122 before deducting abnormal points, for an actual typical score on net would knock it down considerably. Looks like tine length hurt it too. The width might be wider than main beam length. Still a cool lookin deer

I know of a deer scored at willow valley and by looking at it u would say it's non typical the b&c official scorer there said u need over 14 inches of non typical antler to be a non typical this deer they scored was like 1/8 inch short

Lots of discrepancy regarding required nontypical length....
For fun, heres MY measurements:

tip to tip - 26 4/8
greatest spread 28 2/8
inside spread 26 4/8
rt main 24 4/8
lt main 24 6/8

abnormal right 12 2/8

rt 2 7 7/8

rt circ 1 4 7/8
rt circ 2 4 4/8
rt circ 3 3 7/8

lots of discrepancy on required length.....because there is NO requirement. it is entirely up to the hunter to decide which way he wants his head scored.

you are also missing a circ measurement on each side. if you have 12 2/8 in non typ points, then the difference in score should be 24 4/8 for typ vs non typ. the only difference is whether you add or subtract the nt points.

whichever....hes a cool buck anyway. congrats again.

I'll have to see if I can look at scorers sheets before they toss them.
Either way , he IS a cool deer! And truly, that, and the fact he is awful tasty, are all that matter!

What i found weird about official TYPICAL score sheets is that on the Gross score it only gives the typical gross score, no where on the sheet does it say the actual full gross score. You have to add the abnormal points to the gross at the bottom of the page.
