There is a proposal is to develop Police lake into a "trophy" lake where ice fishing and bait would be banned. Only lures (spinners and flies...just no bait) will be allowed and the daily limited is proposed to be one fish over 50 cm. i.e. only large fish can be killed! The lake would be open for fishing from April 1 to Oct 31.

Elk..

The public meetings with regards to the conversion of Police Outpost Lake were done about a year ago. Strong support from the public to change the regulations. Expect to see the regulation changed for 2008 if the rumor mill works.

Thanks i just got it sent to me in an email. i wouldent mind the new regs, except i would still like to ice fish it, would be nice if it was still a bait ban and then cut the number of fish you are allowed to keep like the upper K :)

That would create an awesome fishery. We used to always go at ice out and catch dozen of 18-20'' rainbows in really shallow water. Was a lot of fun but they got fished out pretty quickly as summer rolled on. Never ice fished it as i have a few other lakes i prefer to head to. That was a pretty controversial issue last spring, i heard mostly opposition against the idea from all the local retired guys that just want to get 5 fish for food. I think it would be pretty neat.

They did that at Bulls Head reservoir south of the Hat, there are some nice fish in that lake now, 10 lb rainbow on a flyrod is a lot of fun.

Great to see. Bullshead has been so packed since the reg change. Will be nice to have some of the pressure moved somewhere else. There is definately a demand for these type of lakes in Alberta right now!

I think a slot limit would be more appropriate. Say anything 12" and under you can keep but 13-24" must be left. This way you are minimizing the smaller fish in the laking making more food for the larger fish.

As for the old timers just wanting thier 5. There is 5 or 6 different lakes all in that area they could easily go to. Infact Payne and Dipping Vat are only 15 KMs down the road, Beavious, Beaver Mines, Lee, and Butcher are another 30 minutes.

Oh man, such a dilemma. Let's see, 5 scrawny 12 inchers fresh out of the tank or a 20-25 incher. And those damn bigger fish just don't fit in the fry pan.

I would like to see the minimum size to be set at 21 or 22", then some of the 3 year old mature fish that are 19-21" wouldn't get bonked during the spring spawner roundup. If the government decreases the outrageous stocking numbers to a reasonable amount the fish will grow very quickly. Fishing will be great in 2009.
