Crawling Valley Report

Went to Crawling Valley yesterday for our weekly trip.
No snow on ice so be careful when walking it is like a skating rink. Ice is 29"
thick so if you have an armstrong auger eat your wheaties.
Brought home a pike and a burbot and had half a dozen other hits that didn't get up the hole. Wasn't a lot of action on the fish cam either. One thing we did see for the first time was several perch on the screen. I have never caught or seen any in this lake before so if anyone else is the same it may be worth taking some small lures and bait. We were only prepared for the big boys on this trip. We caught on jig/minnow and smelt.

Good report. Perch? Thay could grow to be monsters in that lake.

Was able to get out on the lake this afternoon for about 2.5hrs and we did not bad..We got out on the ice about 16:00hrs and rolled up just before dark at around 18:30hrs.. Between two of us we were able to put 4 decent 2- 4 pound Pike on the ice and 3 nice Walleye in the 1.5 - 2 pound range.. So it was fun for sure..

This nice weather we are enjoying is not supposed to last so I figured a guy better make the best of it.. It was a nice change from work for the afternoon to say the least...

We hit all but one fish (a Walleye), on jig tipped w/minnow and the one on a jig with mister twister leach imitation,, the fish were taken in water ranging from 8' - 12'...

All fish looked healthy and looked quite well fed,, I think the Walleye are going to turn on I was able to re-hook two of the Walleye after they stole a shiner off the hook once, they came back for more.. I kept one Pike for supper ( please don't tell my kids ) :o :o :o and when I cleaned him his belly had at least a 1/2 dozen Perch minnows in it,, most were still quite fresh so this guy was on a hunting trip for sure...

So that's the report from Crawling for today,, was a good day on the water...

If you google, gowalleye, you will come up with gowalleye, fish hard or go home, cant miss it. If you look you will find some bathymetric maps of southern alberta. Print em, laminate em, throw em in the truck or the boat, and you are off to the races. They are easy to find....Sorry, i dont know how to post links and such:( .

Where were you guys fishing on the lake.
We were on the east shore about 2/3 of the way up about 1/2m past the last ice shack..

Why is that everyone is fishing the east side and not the west side this year, I have the large ice shack on the west side and had lots of luck with pike, walleye and ling.

I couldn't really tell you why gramps,, this is my first time ice fishing the lake and I just liked the structure on the east side.. Earlier in the winter when I first went out I just picked a spot kind of away from everyone else that showed good structure and started fishing,, we have been back to the same spot 3 times now and it seems to be producing well for us.. I am definitely open to new ideas thow...

I find that the structure is like Walleyes said easy to see. I do think that those of us that fish the lake alot and have GPS tend to look rather silly to those who don't know the lake. I love Crawling. The abundance of mid lake structure is incredible. Every time I fish there I find something new. I am usually the guy that is fishing in the middle of nowhere on a mid lake hump that you wouldn't have any indication of except GPS.

Walleyes try to slip down for the summer and you are in for a treat.

I plan on fishing it this summer,, looks like I will be working around the area all summer again so I hope to bring down the boat this summer and get out on Newell and Crawling.. If I'm going to be stuck in this country working a guy may as well try and make the best of it... Not that its bad country its just hard for a guy raised in the woods to take sometimes,, I get tired of it pretty quick...
