Went to Spruce Coulee today with my 7 year old son. He had his limit of Brookies in about 5 minutes. In 3 hours we caught about 40 using 1/32 oz jig and very small minnows. Biggest one was about 12 inches. Ice was about 7" thick. Good luck out there!

Good to know Kelly.

May have to try and make a trip down that way before Christmas so I can get in before the snow builds up.

Did you see any pigs?

No pigs Nate, but I didn't even put the camera down. We did get some good ones there a couple years ago. Road getting there was good but that could literally change overnight. Let's hope it's accessible at least for part of the winter. Let me know when you're coming as well. I can't guarantee I can come due to Christmas, work, etc. but I will try.

Thanks Kelly, great to know. My kids will be here over the holidays, so (road conditions permitting) we will give it a try.

Did you guys try Reesor at all ?

Thanks ~ Nigel

I did not try Reesor but I did see some guys on Michelle Saturday. One guy drove on the ice at Michelle if you can believe that.

where is spruce coulee?

South of Elkwater on Hwy 41, then east toward Fort Walsh/Reesor Lake. Check with park staff if you are coming from a ways away, as the road has the tendency to drift in in the winter, and it may be inaccessible.

Anyone out in this area in the last week? Was hoping to take the family out between X-mas and new years, but not sure about the ice and the bite? Any info would be great!

Ice should be good at Spruce. We were at Cavan this morning. The fishing sucked but there was a 7-8 inches of good ice. It is always cooler up in the Cypress Hills, so I am sure Spruce is good - not sure about the bite though. Have heard to stay away from the dam outlet as the ice probably isn't safe as they are releasing some water.

Thanks for the update and info about the possible thin ice. Sorry to hear the fishing was slow at Cavan. Did you see or mark many at Cavan today? We may stop there on the way back to the Hat.

Sounds like you had the right formula at Cavan! I bet your little guy had a riot! Taking my 5 year old and hoping I can get him into a few at either Spruce or Cavan. Thanks for the info.
Anyone have any tips?

Thanks!

Biggest was only about 12" Didn't see anything bigger either. Wonder if the bigger ones winter killed as they seemed to be this years stockers. No open spots seen.

We fished there a couple days ago, farther back away from the dock. Nothing open back there either, ice was around 12" thick and we got 7 brooks while we were there, nothing overly big though. Got most of them on minnows.
