Who is a good manufacturer of power ice augers and about how much should I expect to spend for an 8" gas powered machine?

I've seen prices ranging from $249.00 to over $500.00.

Anyone have any advice?

I think there was a thread on this a little while ago.

I myself love my strikemaster. It is pretty quiet, light weight and starts up in any weather. It was also a really good price.

The 3 top brands that most guys use are strikemast, jiffy, and eskimo. All of them are decent set ups from what I have seen and all have their ups and downs.

I know you mentioned gas powered, but If you can afford it I would consider electric or propane. You can get 70 holes off an electric. If you ever fish out of a permanent shelter or drill in a pop up these are the way to go! Just a thought.

I have a Jiffy STX and its good but if noise is a factor you may want to look at an ice gator.

Jiffies are known to be extremely loud. I know alot of guys with eskimos and I dont think I have heard a single person complain about starting up on any more than one or 2 pulls in any weather. Cant say the same for a few others.

I bought Strikemaster this year in February and I had to visit repair shop twice already. Maybe my luck

My Jiffy has drilled hundreds and hundreds of holes with no issues. But I agree it's noisy. I burn all the gas out of it every spring, seems to work for me. Starts up every time I try it.

I picked up an Eskimo Stingray last year and I am well satisfied with it. It was my first gas auger, so I don't have any previous brand loyalty. It's lightweight but still quite fast in getting through the ice.

Hard to beat one of the older Jiffy augers. Look for a used one in the 200-250 dollar range. They are bulletproof and will run forever if you take care of them. I don't like any on the new ones because they use too much plastic. If you can find a used Tanaka or Husqvarna, scoop it up, but they are hard to find. An 8 inch drill is a good all round size but if you are going for the big boys a 10 inch is the way to go.

Price range may be an indicator of you get what you pay for on an item like this.

I just purchased a Jiffy propaned power auger. Started first pull and is very quiet with no fuel to mix. They are a about $60 more than the gas model. Had a old gas Jiffy that ran great but someone broke into my truck and stoled it.
