Just thought Id Give a quick update

The Wife and I headed down to Chain Lakes yesterday ( December 14 ) , got down and out onto the ice about 9am... One other group on the ice of 3 older gentlemen , had a very nice chat with them. Drilled two holes for the wife and I with the brand new Eskimo auger , worked awesome !!!!!!!! The ice was around 6-8inchs deep where we were ... We were in the middle of the lake at the far north parking lot ( last parking lot you drive down to ) ... Set the wifes rod up with a basic yellowheaded jig and a peice of velvetta cheese on it , as Im grabbing my rod she reels in the first of the season :sign0161: .... Get my line down with basically the same setup but an orange jig , before it hits bottom *WHAM* had one on. In total we caught 32 trout and took 4 home to have a wonderful fish fry last night !!!!

All in All a great day out on the ice , wish I could spend everyday out there !!!

I would say Chain Lakes by Nanton and Longview, southwest of Calgary.

Made it out to chain lakes earlier today with the lady. First time ice fishing for the both of us! Turned out great, had 15-20 over a few relaxing hours on the lake, brought a couple home for a great dinner. About 8in of ice at the south end where we were, quite a bit of water on the surface walking out right now though.

what area of the lake is good? I always fished the rocks on the north end, or the channel near the spillway as a kid. Are those hot in the winter, or do you need to go deeper into the middle of the lake?

I'd say that's worth driving down and drilling a few holes.

how do you get the velvetta cheese to stay on the hook?

seriously !!!!!!!!!!! are you kidding me
take a little piece . roll in in your hand
take that little ball and add to hook
it is not that complicated

I bought the block of velvetta cheese before. The cheese is soft and won't stay on the hook!

use a small sz 14 or sz 12 treble hook, then you will have no problem with the cheese sticking to the hook.

I think though that that cheese only works on certain lakes. Over here a Chickakoo lake I never heard of anyone catching trout with Cheese

I have rolled a big blob and put it on a larger hook , laid it on the bottom
caught the biggest fish of the day, if it doesn't stay on the hook means something is at it, try a smaller bobber and watch
I agree velveeta is not for all lakes but has worked well at chain and standard for me, I always have a larger hook with a big blob as well as a smaller hook
