Hey All,
Saw someone mention on a Wabuman thread that they took walleye out of Genesee lake to stock Wab.
I had never heard of Genesee having fish in it, and I looked around online and couldn't find any info on it...
So im wondering if there are any fish in it??? Are you allowed to fish in Genesee if there are fish?? I dont see any info in the regs about it..?
Seems like a pretty big lake to not have any fish...??
Tight lines..
PS: lets not turn this thread into a pi$$**g fight over whether they took fish out of Genesee to stock Wab...its irrelevant.

I could easily be wrong on this, but isn't it private?

there's access points for the public (one just down the road from the plant) I see alot of dead pike washed up when I'm out there though so there's gotta be some good fishing

There are quite a few fish in the genesee cooling pond. The pond was filled with water from the NSR so they ended up with pike, walleye, rockies, and lots of suckers in there. I even heard rumors of the odd brown being caught. After 9-11 they closed the pond to public access for fishing.....too bad there were some bruisers in there.

Found some info online from the Capital Power Corp that said this:
"Walleye Transfer Project
In late October, Alberta
Sustainable Resource
Development carried out a project
on the Genesee Cooling Pond
to capture and transfer walleye
to Lake Wabamun, a recreational
lake located about 65 kilometres
west of Edmonton.
The Department of Fish and Wildlife are re-introducing
the predatory fish to Lake Wabamun to improve the lake’s
ecosystem as part of a six-year project. Since the Genesee
Cooling Pond has a population of walleye it made sense to
contribute to this worthwhile initiative.
Both nets and fishing rods were used to capture the fish. A
relatively small quantity of walleye was caught and the vast
majority was all large sized mature fish. It appears that they
are not spawning in the cooling pond as no young fish were
captured. The presence of mature fish in limited numbers
also indicates that the screening equipment that was
installed in 2007 is working to limit the uptake of minnows
into the cooling pond from the North Saskatchewan River"
So basically there were some big walleyes and then they caught most of them and put them in Wabuman.
Might still be worth a try but sounds like a waste of time.
Thanks for the info guys.

I had heard that it is closed to the public several years ago. Because they closed the cooling pond, they decided to open the Heritage Park and trout pond just down the highway. I had heard there was good fishing at the cooling pond years ago. Wanted to go there myself. Went to the trout pond instead and caught a few scrappy rainbows last summer. good fun for the kids!

Are you talking about East Pit Lake?

Genesee is absolutely closed to public fishing. They closed it due to liabilty
( safety issues) a few years ago.
It's too bad they closed it. I was doing some contract work on the site this Summer and SRD was doing some test fishing. There are definitely some big fish in there.

I think you might be confused with another body of water. They have signage up all over the place stating absolutely no public access. I specifically asked out of curiosity, one of Capital Power employees that has worked in the office at the plant for years. It has been closed due to liability issues.

I think its sort of like fishing in the canals back when the power plant at wab was still running your "not supposed to" but its poorly policed and im sure theres a fair share of people who will fish there regardless so its pretty much use at your own risk.
my 2 cents

Wierd we went out at rr25 walked thru the graveyard and down the hill its the only open water around so if there's no fishing they definitely don't enforce it and the pic I saw was without a doubt there just sayin

RR25 is well East of Genesee so I'm not sure where you might have been fishing.
Genesee lake runs between RR30 west to RR33. Anyone attempting to fish it good luck with that and watch for sniper fire. :)

my two cents... The cooling pond is definately closed to public access, a friend fo mine used to work out there before they closed it there was day picnic areas, boatlaunch and all that good stuff.. but the huderites would come and keep absurd numbers of the fish they would catch out of there, and as a result lots of them became ill. therfore they closed it for 'liability' reasons.. there are signs all over statin different things about 'no fishing allowed' and no trespassing .. my favorite sign is a large one on the opposite side form the plant that says 'do not even think of fishing here' and they do police it.. but not necessarily very severly.. i caught a 10lb or so walleye there last summer.. and my friend caught 3 5lbers.. theres alot of big fish in there because they pump in the water from the nsr and the fish who have been in the pond growing just get a free meal... if u go there while they are pumping the brown river water into the pond and you fish at the intake i guarantee you will catch fish, and atleast 1 monster... but as somneone else has said.. it is 'at your own risk'... but on the far side u can see the security truck sittin on the opposite side of the pond.. so u have lots of time to run away :scared0018:

There are giant Walleye's in there but it's so hard to get in there without getting caught. Take some slip bobbers and leeches if you go!!!

I fished here when it was open 10 years ago. Some monster pike could be caught at the outflow when they were pumping into the lake - they would sit just off the cuurent and eat stunned fish pumped into lake-were suckers for big dead bait. Once caught a football shaped walleye there when fishing from canoe.
No access now.
