cougar male or female?

I was just wondering how you guys how you can tell if it's male or female on your cougar hunt (before the shot). As right now many wmu are close for males or females.

Look for a black spot that is visible 4 or 5 inches below the base of the tail. This disappears as the cats gets to the age of four, but then it is easy to tell by the cats body and facial features. The toms will have that large crease in their head and look like they are on steroids!

question was not regarding a "mature" male it was how to identify male from female. for sure a 2.5 " hind is going to be male but that does not help those identify a 120 lb female from a 150 lb male. old fellows say that a 2" hind and more is a tom, along with a stride that meets or exceeds 21" when walking normally. only way i can tell is to tree them and get a look at them. though if you follow the track and the lion makes a scratch,it is certainly male. also a female will tend to travel though some of the nastiest bush around while a male will travel ridges, more often than not.

This is the method I've always been taught and used but was unaware that the black hair surrounding the penis disappeared. Sometimes you can also see the scrotum but the black hair is usually pretty visible. That's the only 100% method that I know of.

That was the method i was told as well. I've been trying to find out if that spot dissapears as well? I didn't think it did? Cat guys?

I just shot my first cat this year, and the F&W officers figured he was around 8-9 years old and he still had the black spot.

I have always found black spot more definete with age. Will have to watch and see on younger ones.

So what happens if they dont tree, did you know the one you shot the other day was a tom or was it shot to protect the dogs or you knew it was a tom from track size and planned on taking it anyway.
