After a 10 month wait I finally got my Bison mount back from the taxidermist last night. I told myself before the hunt in February that if the bison I get was to make it into the record book I would do a shoulder mount. If it didn't then I would get a European mount done. It turned out great and will hang on my wall for years to come.

That looks good! I will be going with the euro root as well. I just can't justify the price of a shoulder mount.

Nice Skull. Great memories of the hunt.

I noticed how much separation there is in the nasal, maxilla, palatine and incisive bones. Could be some concern of these bones warping and falling apart in short order.

Did the Taxi boil the skull?

Try an get him scored tonight.

Taxidermist said he boiled him in a dish soap/ soda ash mixture. Dont get the horns in the mixture or they will be white as well. Changed the water out a few times. Then made a paste with bleach and hydrogen peroxide and a little flour to thicken it up and put it on thick. Placed it in a garbage bag and checked periodically until it stayed white. Once done he made sure there was no left over flesh that will rot and stink. Placed a bounce sheet in his brain cavity just in case. Voila, a European mount!!!

That's what I am seeing.

Moose,

Just offering some advice to help keep your skull intact. I've learned about this, the hard way....

You could glue/epoxy the bones in place. The sooner the better, as overboiled bones will warp and become loose. Try to glue the bones in place where they still make contact. You could also wrap the skull with some rope or tape to try and pull the bones together before glueing. Clear/yellow epoxy end up looking a lot like the connective tissue that held the bones together in the first place. Do a clean job and you should like the end results.

Wow, that looks sweet!! Do you know if they remove the horn caps when they are boiling/bleaching the skulls for euro mounts?

I agree that skull is a disaster, what a wreck. Thats too bad he did that too you're beautiful once in a lifetime trophy man. Should be some cheap if not free taxidermy coming out of that deal. Congrats on an awesome animal!

I have used surgical tubing to hold bones together while the glue is drying. I learned never to boil skulls, cooking them is the way to go in hot water, not boiling. Even then ya gotta watch how long you leave the skull in the water.
