No i was not drunk, thought someone might have a idea where is a good place to set up camp. But it seems that asking for advice of so-called fellow hunters,,,,would be too much to ask. And if u read my post u would be able to tell that....................:snapoutofit:............s eems most times this forum is full of :angry3:.....never asked anyone to tell me where there is a bison all tied up..........what a freakin joke

are you hunting the zamma herd with a draw or the woodbuff no tag needed herd

drake
12-24-2011, 10:48 PM
Spend a couple hundred bucks and get a private pilot to take you for a ride around wood buffalo.probally figure out where to camp after that

Houndogn
12-24-2011, 10:49 PM
Zama, with a draw.

We got a old camper that we are taking on one truck, and then a car trailer with quad, etc and to run the lease roads with. Was just looking for a good spot to set up truck and camper and leave car trailer, thinking something off the road. Was just wondering if anyone had any ideas.

I would head south of the highway not north to camp for self explaining reasons. make sure you are out of sight of the high way and take your stuff with you where ever you go. I have seen a few burnt trucks around the assumption turn off.

Good point, will do my best to be outta sight, hadn't really thought of the possiblities of coming back to a crispy camp. thanks

You're way better to stay in Zama at the 'camp hotel'. Get meals and everything there. If you do set up camp, try to stay out of sight, maybe on a lease somewhere? If you do camp,DON'T lock your vehicle, and take anything you want with you, just in case...

Maybe PM bearb8r or Donny Bear, they both have been up there and can tell you what's what.
Myself, I never have been up that part to hunt buff.

I'm a couple of hours south of zama and the weather says no colder -that 20 at night with most nights coming in around -15.
Noralta open camp would be good eats and a warm bed, but with a good heater in your camper and a good bag I'd give the traile a serious look. Campfires are a great way to end the night no matter what season it is.

Lots of good advice, Not sure what that first reply was all about, guy stepped out of his kitchen long enough to spout BS. Your response to his is somewhat understandable. Hopefully not directed at the AO majority.
And hope the anti road hunters don't chime in because that type of hunt at this time of the year, well historically that's the best way to go about it, untill you see them, or 'til you see fresh tracks anyways. With limited snow you may be more mobile.
Good luck on your hunt, And rememnber if you camp, there's 17 hrs of night, ha.

I'm camping up there... Around assumption yeah its rough but zamas pretty safe. We didn't even have a house key to lock our house when I use to work up there. People are friendly and everyone leaves their quads and sleds unlocked in their yards with no issues. I pm'd you my number throw me a text or a call. I can give you some tips.

The guys here at work were telling me that there is a few openings (clearings) just on the north side of Zama that you could stay at. They host mudbogs in that area. Not very remote but way cheaper than staying in a camp in town.

If you do a little looking around you will find a nice spot to stay. The Apache field, which is the biggest in that area, has most of its gas fields shut in. Just oil producers running so its not near as busy around there as in the past.

As stated before, I would avoid the Chateh area for camping. Some guys from town launched their boats on the Hay River and went fishing this summer. Came back and found that their truck was full of bullet holes.

did you find a place to camp? I will be heading up there on jan 13 for the hunt and am also going to be camping let me now

The weather has been extremely mild for this time of year up here -6 at the moment. If you want to camp stay by the Chin river which is only 60 km from Rainbow and 80 km from High level. Everyone on here mentions staying in Zama or High Level but forget that Rainbow Lake is right close to hunting for bison as well.

Theres only a foot of snow max right now and traveling in the snow will be loud. If you want more details PM me.

Got drawn last year and killed a big bull right out of zama, stayed at Noralta camp the guys there were great and gave me a break on prices for the rooms just because we were hunting buff,I would seriouslly look at staying there much warmer and food is fabulous Make sure you get in touch with fish and wildlife as they were a great help in my success on killing a buff
good luck to you

Wasn't near as tuff to get done as i thought it would be, we brought ours home whole, and did all the skinning hanging off a tractor, so i guess that one doesn't count, but there was a couple other fellows there that had theres skinned out and quartered up and in the truck in about 2 1/2 hrs. But we drug it right up to there truck outta the bush with our truck whole. So that made it a bit easier, and the weather was good too, only about -10 to-15

Yes we did and I will for ever be greatful for that tug to the road. Just wondering if your camp looked like time square the next morning with all the hunters showing up looking for a piece of the action. Did anyone else get on the herd? Thanks again for everything and I will be posting here in the next day or so.

Yes it was grand central there in the AM. We were outta there at first light so don't know if anyone else got one. Same fellows that missed theirs were back, and a fellow and his son, and then the other guys that we called right after we got ours, finally found the spot. I geuss maybe my directions left a bit to be desired in the heat of the moment !

Couple pics, Wish i could say i shot it, but it was my partner Ron who did the shooting. Was a great hunt and we came home with smiles, so thats the best. Maybe i'll get longwinded later a tell the whole story, but in the mean time this will do. Met some awesome folks in Zama, went in to get fuel one night and the cardlock was down, and a fellow hauling methane, called his boss and he came out and got us fuel at the other cardlock..that was a lifesaver for us that night. So thanks to you Donnie, sorry don't remember the drivers name ! Thanks to Brian at the yamaha dealer in high level..thanks to Kent ( Kaman maintence i beleive) in Zama, the lady at the husky too.. And the 2 Brians from whitecourt, Gary and Armand and a pile of other hunters we met as well.............HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!

Well got home and thought I'd get a few shots of mine up for you to see. My partner Armand wasn't here for our informal photo shot this AM so had my daughters in the photos with me. I was really proud of this boy.
