Went out with Dad and Running Bear in the 23rd to try our luck at "cow tipping". Morning saw us allot of wolf tracks and you could tell they were pushing the elk hard. Also came across one heck of a lynx track. On our way back to try another spot we came across 84 elk out in a field. Unfortunately we did not have permission to hunt this land so we watched them for a while and decided they were headed for some crown land and if the spot we were headed to didn’t pan out we might try and track this heard down on the crown. Well after a good march through the snow we still turned up more wolf tracks and a few elk tracks but no elk. So we went for a coffee and made the plan for our assault on the heard of 84. Our plan worked perfectly we cut across the crown land and picked up their trail. A good stalk through the thick bush had us right on top of them in their beds. Getting a shot and the camera on them at the same time proved more difficult. After bumping them a few times in the woods it all came together on this great cow. The 270wsm dropped her down hard. I have some great meat for the freezer and can’t think of a better way to spend a day before Christmas with family and friends.

Yeah shes the biggest I have ever seen on the ground. Me and the old man had a pretty go heave hoe to get her into the argo. The best wild meat I have ate in a while did up a roast last night man o man it was good.

Phil that is exactly where and how she fell, other than lifting her head for the picture we never moved her. It was a great hunt and easily the biggest cow elk I've ever had anything to do with.

You would almost think you guys knew what you were doing ! Having some fresh snow works nicely for doing the final cleanout after the field dressing.
I still think Matt put her in some hypnotizing trance and told her to lay still..;)

Rich , Aaron shot his first Bull Moose this fall but it decided to make it into the thick blow down stuff before he died and made us work our arses off into the dark getting him out in Quarters. Great training for a newbie though..
Weird thing is it was only a 2 yr old Moose but one of the toughest meat i have had to chew?? I was only able to hang it 4 days due to the warming trend, maybe thats why....

Congrats again to Team Melon !!

Thanks guys, We had such a great day. The weather was perfect lots of laughs and we were able to tip I mean harvest this cow. Not sure if she was the "lead" cow she was last in line in the bush and stood still long enough for the camera and I to line up. She was dry this year but carrying for next year.

Good job Matt, we will have late season tags next year.
I am prepping the wife, telling her to expect cold weather, deep snow etc, but she is worried the cow may be pregnant. I told her to shoot an ugly one, ha.
Congrats again.
