Got this guy a few years back. Made a perfect shot right behind the shoulder with a 45 grain JHP from my 223 and he still managed to make it three feet down the hole. Getting him out of there was interesting!

cool on the december badger with gopher in mouth
i shot similar early spring with just out gophers, its a good time as the big scarred up male gophers are out, and a sudden fresh 6" dump of wet heavy snow kept them to their mounds with nowhere to go, feed limited and they were hungry, i think we shot 700 out of one quarter that morning, i shot a big male gopher coming back through the snow into pasture from willow bush with a mouse in his mouth, mouse was still warm/limp and had small blood marks under its throat i shizz you not! gopher hunting had a new definition that day, have pics somewhere of that, got a couple albinos that day too

Still waiting for mine, I have be injured many times this season by badger holes, I dunno how you southern folk advoid them things. I was even watching my hunting partner step for step and I would step in holes still I have a small vendetta for them as well as a huge want for a couple rugs around the house. How does one target the critters?? I heard that since they only eat meat they cant really hibernate???? I would rather not just chance across one, I would like to target them and successful how do I do it?? Will a 22-250 be to much for damage or better off using the .22 and gettinbg less then 30yrd shots. First time badger hunter long time admirer. Thanks for the tips, not trying to hi-jack just trying to get a few pics on here

the deeper you get into winter, the less likely you are to see one. they seldom venture out when its really cold, but they do not truly hibernate. best fur is late jan to the end of feb, but also the hardest time to get them.
ive never really actively sought them....just happen on them by chance. right now i suggest just putting on lots of miles with your nose on the glass and hope to get lucky. if you know there is one nearby....predator calls can work. usually though, by the time you find the holes, they have moved on so random calling isnt a likely bet. if you chase one down a hole though, wait an hour or so and you might call him up.

With all of these chinook conditions here in the south right now, I strongly suspect the badgers should be out in full force. Check for areas with lots of fresh dirt piles on the snow. They'll turn up!

nice pic for the antis to work with. should probably be removed, killing animals with shovels and tire irons on a hunting site...... just sayin....
So shooting them and stickin arrows in em is ok but a shovel makes it bad?

Got my first badger today, along with 50 or so gophers. He's already in for a full body mount. .17hmr once again. Went 4' down his hole, but with the help of 2 shovels and my dad, he was retrieved. Pretty eerie reaching down into that hole, trying to pull him out! But worth it! Made my Canada day long weekend even better!
