I am thinking of getting a second mastercard or visa and was just wondering what types of cards are out there that ppl suggest using. No specificates as I can research them on my own, I was just wondering what is out there. Something with a type of reward plan would be nice. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

RBC offered me an avion card with 15000 points and I grabbed it. Doesn't take long for points to add up if you're good with the card.

We use the RBC Avion card and PC Mastercard.

Lots of Airmiles racked up on the Visa, and in the last 6 months, I have accumulated $200 in free groceries from Superstore.

I also have the platinum Avion card. Works great for me, now I just have to use up all these points.

flight reward miles such as Aeroplan or Avion are the best in my opinion and you'll get a nice little starter bonus, but they come with a higher interest rate ~20% if you want a lower rate, your option for rewards lessens. MC will give you cash back option at a lower rate but its not that great, you'll get back a small percentage at the end of the year.

RBC Visa Classic Low Rate. $20 annual fee. 11.99% interest. Best reward ever is not paying 19.99% any more!

EDIT: I carry a balance.

BMO Elite card is great cause the points can be used as cash for flights. Airmiles cards if used in conjunction with coupons work great. If you can use your card for work expenses it is awesome...if you don't spend a lot on cards...save your yearly fees and just get a low fee airmiles card or probably preferably a cash back card with zero fees. Never carry a balance and you are set.

Never carry a balance and you are set.

If someone has the discipline to not carry a balance, then your approach is a good one.

As a balance carrier, my $20 annual fee and lower interest rate save me over $2000 a year in interest.

When I was voraciously collecting Airmiles on my 19.99% BMO Airmiles Mastercard (using coupons, and double dipping where I could), I collected around 5000 Airmiles one year (only managed that many once). At that time, it was enough for a round trip to Scotland during the off season. The price for the roundtrip flight not using any Airmiles was around $600.

Depending on how one uses the cards, the best reward really can be a lower interest rate.

Not being constructive in this statement, but assuming that your old card was 20% that would be a carry over balance of nearly $20 000!

Agree. The 2nd best reward is not getting two cards. I promise you the rewards are dwarfed by the fee's and interest charges when you carry any type of balance!

BMO gold all the way, i put all household expenses on it, and my day to day needs, I end up with a short haul flight a month out of it.

No it is not. For once a person is actually asking a legit question to get honest the truth suggestions. Why is that people always have to look at everyhting with their negative glasses on. All I wanted to know what types of cards ppl were using. No wonder so many people get disgusted with this site. Everyone is always thinking that everyone is out to get them and steal everything from them.

STELLLA!!!!!

I've always wanted to play the part of Kowalski from Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Now this could be an urban myth but it makes sense, which most myths do, like the garden of eden relative to evolution,,,, I digress.

Sign up for a night course at Mount Royal College or Olds College or some such recognised institution,, get your paperwork and apply for an interest free mastercard/visa as you are now considered a student.

Easy Peasy!

for some people credit cards are fine, me I don't have one and don't want one, my wife has a small one that we hardly ever use but it comes in handy sometimes for getting a rental car etc.

my personal belief is if I can't pay it cash I can't afford it, with the exceptions of mortgage or vehicle payment, and even then put down as much as possible, credit is trouble if misused.

I pay for everything with mine. I like the air miles. Sadly Canadian Tire is about the only place left that rewards you for paying with cash. I figure if Mastercard is going to allow me to fly for free and it costs me nothing....why not.

if you pay the balance in full every month that's fine, my buddy is a sub contractor and does that and gets a few free trips a year out of it, however if you are like me then they are bad ideas, paid mine off last year and shredded it :scared0018:
