Red deer river question

I have never fished the red deer river before, yet I was thinking of going with my dad and trying this year. I will be using my fly rod, and my target fish will be trout and whites. My question is, are their only certain areas where you can catch these fish, or is the whole river a free for all? Not knowing this river, I was thinking of starting from the Dickson dam area, and just hiking the river downstream. I am from deadmonton, so areas closer to red deer would be perfect. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

On the other hand, if you know of any other rivers close to edmonton with trout, that would be cool too. We like going to the Hinton area rivers, but a 3-4 hour drive for a one day fish is a bit much. 1-2 hours is much better.

Did you check the regulations? If you don't have a paper copy then you can always read them on line.
I have fished the North Sask between Rocky and Drayton and landed nice sized Rainbows. I quadded in but if you check the maps you'll find that you can get to within a klick or two and hike from there.
The regs will let you know what the speices limits are on various sections of the river.

Oh yes, I know the regs very well. But what I don't know is the area. And the regs map is ridiculously small. Thanks for the tip on the n sask though.

the lower big red is a wonderful mixed fishery the trout are mostly south of red deer and fair tricky to find except in the mile below the dam. they are present most of the way between the dam and red deer good luck be aware poachers abound in this stretch try to find the forks of the big and little red end of rr 1.5 not a bad place to start. tight lines

I have fished the NSR in between Rocky and Drayton for many years and never seen a Rainbow. That is very intresting. Have seen lots of nice Browns, Brookies, Pike, Walleye, Rockies,Sauger and the odd large Bull. I know there are a few Rainbows above Abraham lake. Never knew they were that far down.
