Does anyone out there use bucktail jigs for ice fishing. I thought I would like to try some so I tied up a few, some for bull trout and some for pike. I am glad to say I have caught fish on all of the patterns I have tied. The only problem is I would like to find the proper jig heads for tying. Does anyone have an idea where I could get proper heads for tying buck tails. I've attached a couple picture of the ones I've tried. sorry not the best camera for taking close up pictures

They're looking good so far, and if they're working, why change them!?

Looking for a head that will allow you to tie the material to it, now I have to build up the hook portion first to be able to tye enough material to it. The two yellow headed ones are heads from old jigs that I cut the material off of and them put my own on.

look spot on. the yellow green combos have great potential. cabelas mail order is where I used to order from. I have uesd maraboo jigs with sum success on pigeon lake, cant say I have used bucktails through the ice. one thing I would add is tie 2 of any color combos and make notes. keep a record of successful combos relative to water clarity this will help insure future repeated success.

yelow bucktail with red head best multi species jig. caught pike, burbot, and walleye all over 30 inch @ calling in March. On the aqua vu bucktail strands
stiff enough to stay apart(looks exact like minnow fin) marabou too soft and
clumps together.

good to know did you find fish taking the bucktails confidently. the marabou worked on the fall when minnow takes slowed we felt the more aggressive smaller fish responded to the falling jig when bites slowed from larger eyes

I went to big bucktail jigs this year that i picked up at wholesale sports. Their 2 oz jigs with about a 3.5 inch bucktail and a trailing treb.I'll put it to you this way, Ive been out 9 times this year to 6 different lakes. I have a huge tackle box and i haven't used anything but the bucktails. I've been having great success with these jigs. I generally fish with my buddy and 90 percent of the time when we mark fish it offers at the bucktail opposed to the other option. I highly recommend them.

like a head with a bigger collar on it? round or banana like your yellow ones? let me know. those are pretty nice looking bucktails you've tied up. bucktail is nice, PB i find is better. finding longer stuff is the trick.

I've got a healthy stock of jig heads somewhere; 3/4 & 1 oz I believe. Here's a sample of them. These are tied up but you can see the difference between the heads. Work great for pike, lakers, bulls & dollies. Haven't tied any smaller or tried for other species.
I use these heads because they have nice long shanks on them. The jigs in the photo are about 6" long.
Let me know if you want me to send you some.

Tackle runner, I would live to try a couple of those jig heads, if you have a contact I could buy some from that would be great. Daceminnow I find the larger collar easier to tie to but I can always build them up a bit. I have been trying rubber jigs verses bucktails and I am doing as good maybe better with the bucktail lately, manybe the fish are seeing to much rubber lately. Going out for pike this weekend againt to try them and also see if I can get a few eyes ( will have to tye some for them)

You can also order them from Cabelas. Search for jighead. They have tonnes of variety.
