Went out to Calling Lake New years day. It was -18 degrees in the AM an probably warmed up a bit during the day. Had to cross a large crack to get on and off the ice. I'll let the video do the rest of the talking. Caught three walleye in the slot size, the rest were too big. Plety of skinny pike.

Great video. It's good to see there is some decent action up there. It's too bad the fish are under average for weight.

The fish in Calling are sure underfed. It will be interesting to see how the new regs affect the quality of the fish.

Pretty sure thats why u could keep 2 walleye...gotta thin the fish out because theres no food.... Walleye used to be fat here 5 years ago. Not so much anymore

I believe it is going to 3 in the winter and 2 in the summer with the same slot. In addition, the closed section will be open. Calling could probably lose half the walleye and still have too many. I'd like to see the data UofA has collected over the past year on the average weight of walleye and pike. Hopefully they continue the studies over the next couple years and can detect a difference in size with the increased keep rates. Sounds like a nice little MSc thesis..

Was there yesterday and walked out. You have to be totally insane to drive there right now. Walking only took ten minutes and there were no vehicles anywhere. Fishin was ok but you had to move alot to find any action.

nice little video. really surprised to see there's no snow on the lake. looks the same as down here, that is where we still have ice still. i bet it's been a little while since the lakes were free of snow like that in January up there. thanks for sharing.

Why do you have to be insane to drive out there??? The ice is thicker than it usually is at this time of year with no snow cover. There is a good 18-20 inches of ice everywhere we were. If you like exercise walk, but driving is about as safe as it gets when I was there new years day. Its funny how guys have bigger balls driving on snow rather than good thick black ice.

We were using anything with a minnow on it. Seemed like these fish were starved. Nothing is really in tight schools. Seems everything spread out in search of food. Just move around lots and you'll catch them. All different depths. 6-30 feet is where we caught them.

Well that answers my question if it's sled or quad time at Calling. Nice video & pics. I thought there would be more snow.

Just wondering if anyone could share some access points for the lake?

Provincial Park, and at the tower through the cabins on the east side are the two I know of.
