I have come across this rod. I think its a fly rod, looks pretty heavy duty. It is 8' long, solid wood handle with rubber bumper on the end. It is a 2pc as well. The only markings I see on it is "Major Model 780". Can anyone give me more info on it and maybe what it's worth? Its in great condition from what I can see. I have attached some pictures.

Looks like a salt water spinning rod to me, don't know anything about the brand Major though, have anymore pics of the rest of the rod so we can see the top guides and taper of the rod?

Definitely not a fly rod. I am also leaning towards sal****er spin rod given the rod length, and length from the rod seat to the butt.

Not long enough to be a surf casting rod. Those things are crazy huge.

What you guys are saying makes sense as I got the rod from a guy in BC. The 8' measurement was taken from the bottom of the rod to the tip.

Anyone know what it may be worth. I'm looking to sell it as I wont be using it. It comes with a hard plastic tube.

early 80's heavy spining rod my father had one used for salmon we called it the white whale still has it. best use as halibit jigging rod when paired with old red penn ,sold at maclouds as I remember.seen used with the old pettz reel fairly often

Likely not a spinning rod. Although you don't show it, I'll be the lead guide is way too small for a spinning rod. Also these things are as stiff as pool cues! Looks like an old style mooching/trolling rod. These were meant to be used with reels that look like oversized fly reels. I have one made of mahogany from the 50's.

I was going to say it is probably an older mooching/trolling rod. My dad has one from the 40's made of solid wood with a matching mooching reel paired with it hanging on the wall.

looks like a fiberglass trolling rod. I used to have a similar one made in bamboo, that I picked up at a yard sale

I would say this rod looks like the ones in the link. Eyelets look the same and it is fibreglass. Could anyone use this? Trying to sell a bunch of stuff so I could afford new fishing equipment.

I did get a bunch of different stuff, maybe a Pettz Reel is with it. Maybe have to look for it, just need to know what I'm looking for.

If it was new it might be worth $277 Canadian or 199 not sure is the pound mark like a backwards E.

All the new mooching rods seem to be longer but the older ones were pretty short and stiff.

I don;t think this is a Major Craft rod out of Japan as they have only been around since 2002.

ya the eyelets are quite small, we ended up useing it for hali and other bottom fish, stiff does'nt even cover it, back in the day people used 1lb lead to get deep,we hated useing it with a mooching reel felt wrong. but it threw a 4oz lead some far with my dads big diawa spinning reel and 20 lb mono lol,well far when I was12!!

pettz reel as I remember made big wood mooching reel with a clicker drag and a brass wing nut on the handle side and a brass line guide wire on one side. should have a small plate saying pettz on the back. oh and my spelling may be wrong . they have some value they made an all metal reel as well have, no info on that model.

That's the one, they are Peetz, based on the English Nottingham reels of the 1800's and early 1900's. They had a star-back brass which helped stabilize the big block of wood they were made out of. I don't recall seeing the name plate on the older Peetz, I think that came later.
I had an older Peetz reel for a while, it had no name plate, I ended up trading it for a Penn reel. I was using it for cod in Newfoundland, then they stopped the recreational fishery for cod so I decided to do the trade.

we had a few on my dads boat in the 80's but we though they were just old scrap if we only knew then. they went with the boat. have seen the odd one kickn around. part of their rarity comes from the volume turned in to clocks, next time I see one its mine for a planer board reel hope to have a pair one day

Well I dont have a wood reel, just some plastic and metal reels. I put the rod on Kijiji, lets see what happens.

I dont know what you mean mooching style. I would have to go out to the garage and look at the brands. Let you know when I get a chance.

look like a very large fly reel with out all the holes to save weight ,two handles on the one side.
