Got to lake “X” on Friday morning and started to set up camp. Throughout the day the tip-ups were slow. Every couple of hours I had a 5 pounder on the ice, but nothing bigger. The next morning, I got up from my tent and started jigging for Walleye. I was using a small Swedish jig with 10lb line. As I was lowering my hook this massive head came out of nowhere and sucked it up. Right away I was feeling distort, I thought for sure I was going to loose it, since I had no leader on my line. I just feathered the line for 15 minutes, and then finally I got his head at the hole. I couldn’t get his head to line up with the hole, so I rigged up a 5 of diamonds with 30lb test line. I used this rig to hook him in the gills and up she went. Sometimes a person gets lucky. The Pike weighed 21.6 pounds.

Nicely done! Landing a big pike with no leader is always fun! I landed a 20 pounder two years ago on a mepp's trout spinner!

just thinking, if its illegal to use a gaff hook to land a fish, snagging it with a spoon isnt too far off. but what do I know, I dont work for F and W:thinking-006: got my biggest pike at 22 1/2 on a tiny jig with no leader too, its a real fight to land them that way for sure. lots of excitement :sHa_shakeshout:

Intentionally "snagging" a fish is a no no...always has been...nice pike though.

I'm not sure if this is really snagging, since the fish was already hooked fairly in the mouth as he stated. This is more like a type of Gaff which is also illegal. Oh well sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to get it through the hole.

I've had big pike get all tangled up in the tip up line when caught on a quick strike rig before which made it impossible to turn them head up into the hole. We also had to use another hook and try to hook them in the face as they swam by on semi slack line to get them up the hole. I'm not saying its legal, but what do you do in this situation? If you cut the line the fish will die anyways all tangled up in the line with two large treble hooks.
