Attack on Calgary woman in Mexico a familiar refrain for grieving Albertan
Calgary woman victim of violent attack in Mexico

CALGARY - After being brutally beaten at a Mexican resort, Calgarian Sheila Nabb has awoken from her coma and is now on the long road to recovery, her family said Tuesday.

Nabb, 37, who was vacationing at the Hotel Riu in Punta Cerritos, Mazatlan with her husband Andrew, was found unconscious and bloodied in an elevator, the victim of a vicious attack now under investigation by state police.

In a statement, her brother Paul Giles and sister Kathy Carmichael said Nabb was brought out of her medically induced coma at a Mexican hospital Monday afternoon and will have surgery later this week to repair the severe damage to her face.

“She recognized Andrew and his father, was responsive to questions, and was able to understand and follow directions,” they said.

“This is excellent news as it would appear that there is not any brain damage.”

Nabb is also breathing on her own through a tracheotomy and without a ventilator.

“She was able to indicate that she felt some pain, but her jaw is wired shut so she was unable to communicate verbally,” they said.

Nabb is scheduled to have facial reconstructive surgery later this week based on results of CT scans she had Tuesday.

“She has a long road of recovery ahead of her, but we all know that Sheila will pull through this with the support of everyone she has ever met, and many that have never met her,” her siblings said.

“Our family wants to thank everyone who has offered their prayers and support though this trying event.”

They said Andrew has remained a “pillar” through the traumatic ordeal.

“It just goes to show exactly how much he truly loves her,” they said.

Police found bloody tracks in a hallway and believe Nabb may have been attacked somewhere else and dragged to the elevator, Mexican media reported.

Reports from Mexico said one police source was told by hotel staff Nabb had been drinking with someone earlier Thursday night.

A trust fund at TD Canada Trust has been set up to assist with expenses not covered by insurance.

The fund is set up as David Peterson in trust for Sheila Nabb, transit number 8072, account number 6519124.

That fellow looks pretty down and out. It will be interesting to see if the lady in Calgary recognizes him when she sees the picture.

I think you should rephrase to all police are corrupt, don't trust them. I mean after all thats what you imply on 99% of the other LE threads you've posted in.

You're taking your life in your hands in Edmonton too really lol

Five-year average

A look at 10 popular travel destinations and the five-year average of the number of Canadians assaulted or killed while visiting.
Country Incidents per 100,000 visits
Cuba 1.5
Dominican Republic 1.6
Jamaica 3.6
Mexico 2.1
United States 0.03
Worldwide 0.5

I bet Edmonton/Prince George/Winnipeg has a higher rate of assaults/murders of Canadians per 100,000 people than some/most of those places. In fact, if Edmonton has 47 murders, and 1.2 million people... And that's not including assaults even.

Buddy must have been downright p'oed with her if he pounded her face like he did. Trauma to the face like that is personal! Hard to believe that the cat they paraded on t.v. is the assailant. I expect that hubby's going to have to answer to Canadian police not the Keystone cops from old Mexico!

Considering the majority of Edmontonians are Canadians I would suspect so....look at your own list worlwide the avg is .5 in the 3rd world places like Jamaica and Mexico and Cuba the rate is 3 to 7 times higher...and thats just quoting Canadians...whats the rate among foreign tourists?

Whether the risk in mexico is actually higher means nothing to me. After all the warnings if I took the wife and kids there and something happened to one of them it would kill me. PERIOD!

I've seen the interviews. Who parades an accused before the media whether the accused confessed or not? Some poor sap who couldn't put his finger on Canada without someone placing it for him.

Who captures a stealth surveillance drone and parades it around like a circus attraction? Lot of big fish in little ponds out there.

Haven't you heard? 921,455,237,334,298 Canadians visit Mexico yearly, and only 11 have been killed or worse, so it's completely safe :scared0018:

Well let's see:

I used to work with Meike Grove. She was murdered in Mexico by a taxi cab driver.

The Mexican authorities did nothing until forces from "a car manufacturing company" got those badgeless monkeys off their axx to do some investigating.

God Bless Meike.

There's not 921.5 Trillion people in Canada? Really?

Guess I am going to have to start putting a disclaimer on all my replies.

And i was being facetious. I guess I should use those stupid smilies. Enjoy your holiday in Hawaii with the 88,999,923,718 tourists. Been there, done that. Nothing like sitting on the beach, and being swarmed with bus loads of Japanese. Flashbacks of Pearl Harbour.

Thanks! I can not wait.
They must go to a different beach. That never happened to us at the North Shore, Waikiki beach or Hanauma bay.
There were far less there total than a single day in Banff than I can remember.
