Hit the Bow with my bro' super early Sunday morning. Took a few pics.

My bro' throws a streamer...

The payoff- he lands a nice brown trout...

http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/233/p1290916v.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/855/p1290916v.jpg/)

We got a crapload of whitefish; pretty even split between this nymph & the usual red wire San Juan Worm...

It was a beautiful morning; no wind & lots of action. This gorgeous 20" rainbow was the icing on the cake for me. He took the same nymph that the whities were eating...

Maybe a bit of cutthroat in his family tree???

http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/7715/p1290922.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/832/p1290922.jpg/)

Shhhh!!!
This duck's trying to have a nap!!!

Thanks to Wayne Christie for keeping all the wind out east for the morning.:)
'Twas nice to fling flies for a few hours!

NO problem, I love fishing in hurricanes, at least the fish didnt seem to mind. I miss those rockies, caught about a zillion over the years, but the sturgeon down here pretty much make up for it. :sHa_shakeshout: have a crazy idea of maybe trying for one with a fly rod this summer, with a real minnow though. if I could guarantee a small one Id go for it, dont think Id want a 50 incher on a knucklebuster reel though! awesome pictures as per usual. you will have to teach me how to flyfish for goldeyes this summer too!

Don't sound too crazy to me, Wayne. People fish tarpon on fly rods, don't they?
Do ya want to borrow my 2wt?:)
Count me in for the goldeye fishing; I'll even pretend I've fly fished for 'em before, if you like...

I spent some time chatting with a young fella who was spin fishing in the same area. He said he didn't like taking one particular path down to the river, 'cuz at different times he had been followed by wolves & chased by 2 big bull elk.
Do ya think he accidentally wandered into the Calgary Zoo???

Maybe if he was fishing the bow waaaaaaay upstream.

That said, I had 4 coyotes eating a doe at McDouglasdale this fall. The bull elk left me alone though.

only you could get the colour composition right and make a dead duck a really nice photo worth framing and hanging above the mantle. It's a million dollar picture.

You could run a big hook through that mallard and call it the Bow River Mallard pattern.

A new Kill de Canard pattern versus the classic cul de canard.

When I started fishing that area quite a few years ago there was no sign of that glass. A big chunk of bank washed out in the flooding of '05, exposing all that stuff. The fish don't seem to mind it...:)

I was fishing the Highwood in High river long ago, after a big storm I found what looked like a glass dump in the river, since I collect old glass now Id love to find it again,, but its probably washed away. and the duck isnt dead, you just cant see the half empty bottle of rum just out of the pic. :oregonian_winesmile

Great photos as always.
With all the broken bottles lying around, I wonder if mr. mallard was partying too hard, got drunk, passed out and rolled by a canada goose?

thanx for posting.

I've been staring down holes in the ice 4 different times since Christmas; I just ain't caught enough fish to make it worth talking about...:(

Maybe the mallard drank too much Baby Duck and that was it.

You know I think Mr. Pipco has the answer. Maybe the mallard did not pay protection money to the Canada Geese.

Where is Ducks Unlimited when you need them?

I think you have to drop a line with a lure or bait down the hole too. staring just doesnt cut it some days :bad_boys_20: guess I will have to hand you off another fish?

How do you tie your red wire worm? Would you mind posting a picture of one?
Thanks

Hey, Steve...nice fish! Was thinking of heading down to the Bow, this weekend, if I can drag my sorry arse out of bed. Looks like a Prince nymph...or a reasonable facsimile thereof? Were you just using a Clouser for the streamer?

Here's a pic...

I couldn't find the recipe, but I'll give it my best shot from memory:
Step 1- get a hook
Step 2- wrap red wire around it
Step 3- catch trout and/or whitefish

I do a few different sizes, put beads on some.
I prefer a hook with a curved shank; not sure it really matters, though.

Not sure what that nymph is; it's not a Prince(no white biots), but probably looks much the same to a trout or whitie.:) Last time out I had good luck on a CDC Prince.
The streamer my bro' was tossing was similar to a Wooley Bugger & was tan/light brown in color. Folks are catching on black stonefly nymphs right now, as well.
Good luck out there!

A Cutthroat with a worm...have you no shame man! It's hard to even look at that picture.
Nice rainbow. It's interesting how early the fish start to get their spawning colors. It's still 3.5 months until the big sex party.

If that 'bow had a few more spots he could pass himself off as a Crowsnest River fish.

Shame? Me? Come on, man! You know better than that...:)

What size was that fly? #16?

And, do you ever use silver beads? or just gold?
