Shunda Creek

Hey all

Looking to fish shunda this summer but can't seem to find directions. could any one provide some? Also how is the fishing in this creek? I hear the its full of easy to catch brookies and browns?

Don't know how the fishing is. Just drove but Shunda on my way to the Blackstone.

I definitely wouldn't say easy to catch, you have to look for the pools.

I haven't fished it a lot but I have walked a few unforgiving km's

I'm sure theres some guys on here that will point you in the right direction

Shunda creek pretty well follows hwy 11 from around Nordegg to about 15 or 20 miles towards Rocky. it crosses Hwy 11 i think 3 times so is a pretty easy stream to access. there is if i remeber correctly 2 campsites on the river, one at Harlech and the other a the beaver dam site.

the section i mostly fished was from the Nordegg Hostel road downstream to the Hwy 11 crossing. fairly easy walk and some not bad fish in spots. also went upstream thru the large meadow but didn't have much luck in that section. also fished the section around the beaver dam campsite.

like any brown trout stream, to catch the fish you have to be very stealthy and basically out of sight. browns scare very easily and if you just traspe along the bank peering down into the pools, you are not going to catch much. you have to sneek up to the pools and good holding water to have any chance at success.

that being said, it is a pretty fun river to explore, some sections are better and easier to walk then others, some hold better fish then other. you just have to go out and explore it. it does hold some larger fish but don't expect to catch very many of them or very many fish at all most days. but it is a fun little river to try out.

This creek is very hard to fish because it's a creek and there are a lot of trees shrubs and not a lot of standing room, but if you find pools you will do great.

There was even rumor of Golden Trout in the creek :sHa_sarcasticlol:

Thank you, the Shunda continues to be my favorite creek to fish, you will see a lot of wildlife on your journey there as well, deer,moose,elk,bear,wolf,and cougars, but when approaching the pools you have to go slowly, before rushing into the pool for a cast one should watch to see if you can see any rising or hatches etc...

Thanks pikergolf, i am leaving in a few minutes to ravel west somewhere an hour maybe hour and half outside Edmonton to take photos, just don't know where yet, will post pictures tonight.

Shawn did you fish under that bridge? theirs always massive schools of brookies under there.
probably the 2nd easiest place to fish browns with the exception of elk creek.
Most of them are small but there in there. there is a few bigger ones in that river just walk a few Kms downstream and you might hook into a 16incher.
theirs better streams for all day fishing for dry flies but if you want brookies and browns prairie isn't a bad place to start. theirs also fitzsimmons and baseline creek jam packed with them.

I have opened a larger brookie with one of those beetles in the stomach. How in the heck that brookie got that big beetle in the digestive tract is something I can't figure out.
Shawn: is that beetle picture true to colour on the internet? Those beetles always seem to be more black. What do you figure.?

That is the exact original picture, so yea it was amazing to see that this huge beetle caught a fish.

I've done alot of hiking all along Shunda and found the same as you guys... If you find deep pools or beaver dams you can be very surprised what comes out. It can still be a tough place to fish as you could spend more talking walking to find these spots then you actually do fish. Still a beautiful creek to go to and is usually clear before anything else at the beginning of the year.

Agreed, I once caught an18inch brown that had a mouse tail sticking out of it's mouth from one of these holes. I must have walked well over an hour to get to it, and there were no boot tracks in the sand. Awesome place as I remember, even spooked a black bear on the way out.

Shunda was one of the creeks I used to fish years back with much greater frequency. However, the section we used to hit with almost definite success became the hangout of a group of River Otters, very cool, but the fishing there declined accordingly. Still plenty of Brookies and Browns to be had, with the occasional Rocky.
