Over the last few years Pike flyfishing has become very popular through out the world and with good reason, Alberta!
Lets see what kind of gear everyone is swinging and maybe it will give others that are interested some ideas.
I have no pics as of yet but will get some up tonight!

St croix imperial 9wt, with pflueger trion 9/10 reel.

Hauls big flies and isn't too hard on the budget.

I don't have a "specific" pike rod, but I've been known to toss my 5 weight into the river (to answer your question, with a leader.. unless you want to the pike to bite through your line like nothing!) I have actually had quite a bit of luck fly-fishing for pike in the rivers.. Seems when I find a deep hole and toss a big ugly fly there is always a hog waiting to nail it.

Gotta get an 8 weight one of these days specifically for pike.. They are a blast on the fly-rod, but my 5 weight occasionally takes too long to get them in and I try to be conscious about how much energy I take out of the fish when I fight them, as a fish can only recover from so much.

So many set-ups to buy, so little cash... :angry3:

Nice setups guys! I've been using for Pike
-Lamson Waterworks HA Velocity 3 with 10wt Sharkskin Magnum on a 10wt Colton leviathan
-picked up a Orvis Mirage VII for a salt, Salmon and Pike reel. Lined with 11wt. Wulff Triangle taper. also on a 10wt. Colton Leviathan.

Walleye
-Lamson Waterworks ULA 3 lined with 8wt. Sharkskin Magnum
-Lamson Radius 3 lined with Sharkskin 400gr Streamer Express
on 7wt Colton Tradewinds.
The Radius jumps all over my rods because of the sinking streamer line.
For leaders I use 30lb mono and twist into 6-7' furled leader and tie on a 10-20lb wire trace.

I use an 8wt rod with 7wt line and a salt water tippet and salt water mono leader. Have caught a few 36-38 inchers but this was my first over 40. The fly I was using is one that a buddy of mine perfected for the hogs and he taught me how to tie it. This one was 44 inches and was C&R. I have since bought a couple 9wt rods and some Rio Pike line to add to my "arsenal". :)

This pic was from about 12 years ago.
That is my Heddon pal that is older than some members on this site!:sHa_sarcasticlol:
I fished the same rod the first summer I got it in 1965 , after reading an article by A.J. Maclean about fly fishing for pike .

I have to admit I went through your blogspot and was impressed with some ofyour flies!

My pike setup is a 9'6" 8 wt Sage VT2 with Lamson Velocity reel... Sharksin and homemade leaders with mono and titanium leaders. started making furled leaders but have yet to try them on pike...

I decided to try pike on a fly this spring. I bought a TFO signature series 9ft 10 wt rod and a Amundson TXS 9/10 reel. Will be testing it out at Wabamun this spring.

Muskeg, how to you like your 10wt Colton? I haven't used mine yet. The 5wt is powerful rod, but a bit heavy.

Mirage looks like a sweet reel. My buddy has been using one for bonefish.
