Just ordered a Lund 16' SSV this morn with a 40Hp Mercury tiller and now am thinking I should have went with a 30Hp. What do you guys think? I'll be using this boat mainly for trolling and am afraid the 40 will be too big.

I have a 40hp on my Alumacraft 165 magnum and can usually troll slow enough for spinners or cranks if I want to use the big motor instead of running the batteries low on my bow mount. My boat is pretty weighed down compared to most boats in that size so I may troll a bit slower then a lighter boat.

I think you should be find trolling with a 40hp and if you find you are going a bit to fast chuck out a drift sock to get you to a lower speed.

The nice thing about having that extra 10hp will be when the weather flares up and you need that extra kick to get you up and over the waves.

No such thing as to large a motor. Back troll ,trolling plate, drift sock, largest electric u can afford. Enjoy your 55k an hour vs your 43.

If you want to troll extremely slow, an electric motor on the back will be the best. The difference between the 30 or 40 will be minimal. They will both idle at the same speed.

The 40 will be able to get you out of a storm before it hits and the 30 may get you out of the storm when it hits. Hail bouncing off the forehead isn't fun.

I have a couple different sizes of drift socks and they work wonders.

Thanks guys! The dealer said to max out the H.P. and the cost difference is minimal between the two - 350.00. But sometimes bigger is not always better and I hate not making the right purchase the first time around.

Don't even think twice about it...Owned an SSV14 for many years with a 30 hp (max was 35). It trolled great and had enough top end to get off the lake in a hurry.

That will be a nice set-up, enjoy your boat. Did you order the removeable vinyl floor with it? If you didn't, I would seriously think about it, makes fishing a whole lot more comfortable in that boat.

keep your eyes open for a older used 8-15hp gas motor. I have a Honda 8hp 4-stroke on the back of my 16ft Crest Liner & works great.

Yes I'm getting it with the floor. It was the same price with either the Honda or Mercury. I opted for the Merc because it came with a 5 year warranty vs 3 for the Honda. Now for a fishfinder...

The dealer did you a huge favour recommending that you max out the HP on your boat. You can always throttle back and go slower. Can't do anything to increase your HP after you have the lower HP engine. No way that 40 HP is going to be too much motor for that boat. Dealers usually have packages that include a lower HP engine on them to make the sticker price more attractive. Almost everyone who goes with the lower rated engine will regret it the moment they take the boat out the first time. Don't worry about it.

Get a variable elec trolling motor and stick with the 40HP.

A 40 hp on a 16 footer will be just right. I had a 30 on a Lund rebel (14 foot) and I thought is was just about right. Some days when the wind kicked up, I wished I had the 40. Trolling shouldn't be an issue either.

I agree, I have a 30 on a 14' Misty and it seems about right for the size of the boat. With just myself, gas, fishing gear etc, it goes about 24mph.

You should not have a problem finding a quality sonar/gps combo unit in that price range. I have one of the older Lowrance 7" color gps/combo's but hope to be upgrading this year to either a Lowrance HD7 or a Humminbird 798ci combo.

You could probably find a Lowrance HDS 7 or 8 within your budget.

There is quite a few guys selling there first edition HDS units to upgrade to the 2nd edition ones.

I am running a HDS 8 and love it. Others have had trouble with theirs and have switched to Humminbird. It really all depends on what you want.

If I get the chance down the road I am going to try and get a HDS 5 or 7 for the bow of my boat.

What dealer, I was quoted $1000 more for the 40 Hp honda vs. Merc. by Lac La Biche Sports. The boat was the 16' Lund Fury.

I'm getting it from Northgate Honda in Grande Prairie. Finally people around here are willing to deal and keep the money in the area. Three years ago it would have been a different story.

Hows your hull. I had a 12ft Misty river with a 15hp and the floor/Hull would ripple when traveling at higher speeds.

I think you made a wise choice and that boat should last you for many years.

It may have been posted already, but was that a 2 or 4 stroke on it?
