I have never really targeted walleye through the ice but think I have found a lake with a fairly good population and would like to try it out.

I usually set up some tipups for pike, will i be able to catch some eyes on them too? I was thinking about a foot off the bottom, around the base of a drop off.

Also, what are your favourite jigging lures? And do you tip them with a minnow or smelt?

Thanks!

Buckshot rattle spoon is my ultimate goto, so far has caught pike , walleye, burbot, lakers and perch . always tipped with minnow or minnow head.

Instead on the base of the drop off, I like fishing on the slope. 1/4 oz jig with a
2-3 inch shiner minnow works for me. 3 or 4 jigs then a short pause, always worked for me. Good for perch also.

If i target walleye. I go deep between 28-35FOW jigging aggresivly with a spoon. And have a deadstick beside it with a minnow.

I'm using white jigs, tipped with a minnow and I like to fish rocks for 'Eyes.

i dont really look for structure being i dont have a sonar unit, but i find the water depth matters a lot more in mid day then having structure in early morning when they're their to feed on schooling forage. but underwater humps, drop offs are a good place to ambush minnows

Please for the sake of the walleye don't go that deep. :argue2:

You have a way higher chance of mortality after release if you are fishing that deep.

As a rule most walleye fishermen try to stay in 30 feet of water or less.

when i say 35FOW it dosent mean they're at the bottom...Most times when theyre that deep and deeper past 30FOW they're suspended looking for bigger meals. Theyres someone on this forum that was getting them in around 75 FOW at cold lake.
