Its been that way since they started it. Quite a few of the people take a holiday from work and go out for the whole weekend and make a winter camping trip out of it.

The Duck's Unlimited derby is not offering any cash prizes. The top three spots win boats, fourth is a side-by-side (no trailer) fifth is another boat. Here is a link: http://www.fishingsaskatchewan.ca/new/i...final.pdf
The parking is advertised as "first come-first served" (wait until you find out what that means!!) plus it is only a 30 minute drive from the city. It is gong show out there most weekends; this promises to be the worst. Expect perch and a few smallish walleyes in the vicinity of the boat launches in the park, which is the designated fishing area.
Better yet, try the Cowan Lake Derby at Big River on March 24. Cash prizes and great festivities at the Community Hall afterwards. Door prizes, give-aways and cash awards. Food and drink available and is a family oriented affair. Good fun and good people.

How did the Pine derby end up?
Drilled 60+ holes in 5 different perch honey holes that used to produce like crazy, and not one fish to be seen on camera or one bite.
I witnessed at the end of the season last year alot of dead fish on the bottom of the lake, one local said 1500 walleye died also last year with that algea bloom thing.
We left early and the winning perch was 5oz and 3oz caught by the same guy.
Far as I am concerned the lake is dead and won't be back for a couple of years.

I haven't seen perch there all winter. Pike fishing seems to be fair if you know where to find them

I just received an e-mail advising that the Backstrap Ice fishing derby has been cancelled due to a lack of registants.

My guess is that fellas want cash, not merchandise. I'm not going because I already own two boats and because I dislike monster crowds, except of course at the Stampede. YeeHaw!!!
Tell me azzkicker, how is it that you received an email? Were you a registered entrant?
Maybe I'll see you at Big River. I have been told that unless there is 24' of ice 30 days before the competition, no one will be allowed to drive on the ice. I'll contact my buddy up there and see if it is still a go.

I got the same email. I was actually looking forward to it, as I wanted some redemption from the Jackfish derby. lol I think it's ridiculous that they can just up & cancel it b/c they didn't get what they wanted for registrants. Kinda pathetic actually. When my buddy registered almost 3 weeks ago, he was told they had recieved over 400 entries at that point. But i suppose there is no point complaining, as it won't do any good. lol

I'm also a little bitter about Blackstrap. Just got an email stating they had sold approx. 625 tickets when they decided to pull the plug. Which was half of what they wanted.....Again, it is kinda ridiculous that they could just cancel b/c they didn't get what they wanted. Seriously, it's the first year for it with very little advertising & they expect a big number turnout?!! With the prizes likely being donated, even with the numbers they had, it's not like they wouldn't be making money. Look at all the other big ice tourney's, they didn't all just magically start off with thousands of people...they had to work up to that over the years. WORD OF MOUTH goes a long way....good or bad. And in this case, it's gonna be bad. lol IMO, DU should have carried on with whatever numbers they had and just hoped for better next year.....like every other tournament organizer does.

I'd like to add that this D.U. ice derby looked like a money grab from the beginning. The area selcted for the event is the least likely spot to hold fish of any significance on the whole lake. It is, however, the best area for accessing the pond with the exception of the ice shanty village at the north end (Tower Road). For obvious reasons, not the least of which is the hundred or more shacks that litter the ice, the event could not be held there, leaving the Provincial Park as the only other spot. Probably would have required a $5.00 day pass as well, and not a dime in cash prizes.
We have fished that reservoir a number of times and had very limited success near the boat launch. We never go to the place on the weekends due to the large number of wakeboard-towing boats that own the place and make the angler's life miserable, and we avoid the shanty village like the plague. There is one fellow in particular that lives in Dundurn that thinks that he alone owns the lake for as far as he can throw a rock, and has publicly stated that if you park your gear within that distance he will DRIVE OVER IT with his truck.
Not the friendliest of places, and not the best fishing hole in the province. It is close to the city so it remains a great recreational area for swimming, skiing and maybe the odd perch. I do know of a good perching spot (Evan's road) that I like to ice fish, but it is a walk on and a long walk to boot.
Shame on that organization for coming in like gangbusters then walking away when they realized that there was no millions to be made. Don't let this business sour you on fishing in Saskatchewan. There are plenty of great fishing opportunities here, and I for one am glad we packed our bags and left Alberta. Don't get me wrong. I love Alberta. There just is not enough fishing there for me anymore.
