I'm not sure about thicker and stronger, but if it's cracking it's a sign that it's good ice and not rotten.

there is good cracks.... and there is bad cracks. usually the bad ones are more tinney sounding. whereas good ones 90% of the time have a really good thud to them....

Bad cracks are usually followed by a splash sound and a wet feeling !

Ahhhh ha ha ha! I was thinking of posting the same thing. I've heard that one a few times, luckily not while in my truck!
