I really want to make my own net this year and was wondering if anyone has any designs or pictures of some homemade nets they made?
Thanks

I bought a trout net, and used copper pipe to make a new oval frame so I could net whitefish at the ice, wish I could find it!

You can buy replacement net baskets at BPS or Fishin' hole. That would work as well as doing a homemade net basket. You could also try looking at fabric land for netting, I'm pretty sure they'd have something, but it wouldn't be fishing related haha...

The framework is finished.
Ill give that a try tommorow, i want something fish friendly.
the net basket is 27inchs long and 13 inches wide made from birch and bailer twain.

I have a net frame all stained and ready for netting also.

I have found a few online but haven't ordered any as of yet.

I was thinking of either ordering a measure net or one of those ghost nets. I am not to sure which one I will end up getting but those are the two I have looked at the most so far.

The handle is 2inch thick birch and it looks small in this photo.
Its made for the bow river netting big brown trout, bull trout and rainbow trout.

It's nice, but that looks like aspen, not birch.

Its that clear rubber that you see on quite a few nets lately. If you google ghost net it should come up with a few links.

That is a sweet net idea. The one I have all done up is the traditional style frame that you would see in a store.

Yours looks to be similar to the one the humble fisherman uses.

Nice work. Can't wait to see it done and a few pictures with fish in it.

Let me know where you get your black mesh from and what its worth. I would rather pick something up locally then order it off of the net if possible.

Here's an example of a ghost net,
http://www.brodin.com/Platinum_Trout%20.html
the ghost net is clear rubber and it looks great for pictures or video when under water.
You can get the same type of net in black. The rubber is the best net bag material out there for fish, it doesn't rip on trees and hooks don't catch in it.. although it is much heavier than mesh.

most tackle shops should have the replacement nets

Thanks Jayhad,

Down here the only tackle shop we have is wholesale and they only carry the old crappy netting that was used on big landing nets for boat fishing.

If I want a replacement I will have to order online or try to track the right sized one down next time I am in Calgary.

No problem bud,
I think FT had the replacement ghost nets, and Canadian Tire up in Beacon hill has the black rubber. If you get jammed up let me know and I see if I can find one up here for ya...... just got a n ew one myself

Thats a great idea for the frame work. Just throwing it out as a suggestion but it looks like you used sisal twine to bind the cross stick and you might want to replace it with plastic twine or some kind of synthetic rope. Sisal twine is made from natural fibre and has a tendency to rot fairly quickly. One of the main reason I don't use it on my square hay bales anymore.

Like I say just a suggestion but looks great and cant wait to see the finished product!

Dust1n

Im not going for the synthetic look. im going for the natural look. I got a bunch of nets but it would be pretty cool to net a fish from a net you made. And if i loose it it will biodegrade.

Excellent FH7!

I like where you are going with this.

As suggested, replace the twine with something more suitable for water.

Another suggestion is to strip the bark off the branch. It comes off easily when green. The bark will rot and crack and peel, making a mess of things.

Never thought of that but makes a lot of sense for sure. if you need to replace it anytime rawhide string would be a good alternative as well if your looking for any ideas.

Have a good one.

The twain will half to be removed and replaces each season but im alright with that.
I wrapped the Handle with twain aswell to make a suitable grip.

Its a net dude theirs like 10 manufactures with the same basic design. But theirs only so much you can do with a raw piece of wood.

Im going to find a better chunk of wood to work with for smaller trout.
I like how the handle is offset on mine it gives your hand extra support on the back where needed when the net itself is heavy. Imagine a 10lb bully in the basket :)

Have you tried knitting your own nets, not hard and you can make any size and us any type of twin. very easy to do, and theirs plenty of on line tutorials. I learned from my grandad years ago while helping him on the boat back east. It's a dying talent that should be kept alive.

Here is my home made net...

took about 12 hours of total work to make. starting from a 6 foot long piece of 1" x 4" maple and a 6 foot piece of 1" x 6" Pau Ferro ( rosewood).. from these boards, I have materials to make about 4 more nets. The bags are Brodin Ghost bags from fishwest.net

Cut to strips, Steam strips, bend to form... glue up... sand... finish....and FISH!! 100% worth the time and effort.

My next one this size will be made with an Antler for the handle... Cannot wait... but it is hard to find just the right piece of antler from a shed.. Otherwise I am going to make a nice long boat net as well.

Pictures are before and after finishing..

Thanks he must have at least 5 differnt styles.
Theres also a flyshop in BC that a guy makes a living at doing except the price is pretty high but they are homemade nets.
The wilderness survival forum has some decent designs too.

Nice job CanadianEh! And any tips you would like to share?

Best tips:
Do not make corners too sharp.. ( I broke 3 strips before finally getting set without snapping at the corners at the end of the net.)

Make the steam tube out of black thick ABS not thin walled white PVC.. After about 20 mins of steam my PVC tube was so soft I could easily have pushed a finger right through it.. and it sagged badly.

Make sure the strips you cut are nice and straight.. I would plane them if you have acces to a thickness planer.

Thinner strips = MUCH easier bending.. 1/8" is pretty damn hard to bend without snapping. and needs alot of steam time.

Feel free to ask away... If you have the tools and the time... id say go for it.

PM me if you want details...

Very nice canadianeh, If your having trouble bending presoak your strips over night in water.

You could also use a bending strap (usually metal, galvanized would work). Just clamp it on over the last strip before the bend, it helps to take some of the stress.

stunning work

Do you presoak the strips before steaming them?

I used an extra peice of the maple as a strap, and shaped culls to clamp the grouped straps into place..

p.s. sorry for the thread jacking slightly Hunter.. I have also thought about making a natural net like that ones you are talking about. I was thinking more of a bow style net.. ( kind of like a cradle, but with out the sides coming apart like a traditional cradle.)

Hard to explain.. but have a pretty clear image in my head..

ahhh... kind of like this traditional snowshoe

Yes presoaking your material will help allot. You are using maple and rosewood as your material, both of which were kiln dried most likely. Kiln drying takes the moisture content very low almost nill perhaps.

When you steam wood, the steam doesnt actually add moisture to the wood but heats the moisture in the wood making. If you steam the wood to much you are actually drying the wood out. Rule of thumb is 1 hour of steaming for every inch thickness.

So the thin strips you are bending shouldnt need very much steam time.

Hope that helps
Larry

Not bad! My advice would be to warm some beeswax and then rub it on the handle, it will make the baler twine somewhat waterproof and mold/mildew/rot resistant.

You could try making your own net, its not hard to do!
