Friend of mine from Van Island sent me these pics.. He was out for a drive a few days ago and saw the Elk, he said it was belly deep in snow and seemed to be struggling to walk as he started to photo it it became apparent what was happening.. Nothing much he could do but watch..

Please be patient there are four photos to upload..

The cat had a hold of the Elks neck and did not let go,, it did eventually take the Elk down for good..

Wall, were these pics taken on the Island?

Nice looking elk, he seems to be in fair shape. I'll actually surprised a cougar could take dow an animal this large.

There's something real fitting about your sig line under that last photo walleyes - no potatoes and gravy but lots of red meat - that's one tough cat.

Well I feel sort of embarrassed here.. After asking for more info it seems as though buddy was toying with me a bit.. Was harmless but I do feel a little embarrassed for not getting the whole story from the start.. Its O.K. I'll get him back,, Here is the real story behind the pics as they were sent to him.. Sorry for the miss info guys....

Still some amazing photos though..

I took these photos on Monday the 18th of Feb. at 12:30 PM at mm 34.5 on Hiway 191 just north of the Covered Wagon Ranch. The six point bull elk was belly deep in snow and struggling. I stopped to observe, and when the elk stood up, I noticed something hanging from his neck. A cougar was attempting a choke hold to suffocate the elk by collapsing his trachea. These photos are just a few of the pictures I took during this five minute struggle. Finally the cat gave up on his choke hold and decided to take a look at me. He took a couple steps toward me, and I put my hands into the air and yelled loudly. He hesitated, looked back at the elk that was now meandering south along the hiway, and then looked back towards me. I raised my hands and yelled again, he finally retreated up the hill, and the encounter was over.
The bull headed south apparently uninjured and feeling very lucky.

Very cool pics.

I had the opportunity to witness a similar national geographic moment involving a grizzly bear trying to get at a cow moose's two calves. Very humbling experience to be able to witness something like that.

I don't understand where the "cruel" bit comes in. It is just the way things work. No more cruel than putting a bullet or arrow in it.
