We are going to find ourselves in Buenos Aries for a couple days in April and are just wondering if anyone has any recommendations on a hotel to stay at and some things to see and do. Nothing fancy or expensive. We'd like to experience a bit of the local culture.

TJ,
We stayed here. It's a bit upscale, but we got a package deal, and it's right downtown, near a market and many of the historic sites. The people there were very helpful with sight-seeing etc. Worth a look.
Don't miss the tango clubs--good shows.

Lots of "Medical Tourism" in BA.

Plastic surgery and good cheap breast augmentations.

Some great belly busting feeds of beef if surgery is not on your bucket list:)

Hey Sheep,

The wife and I are planning a self drive tour of northern Argentina next winter. We've had numerous recommendations for Recoleta. Apparently, it is a downtown residential neighborhood of historical and architectural interest. Heavily policed and very safe. There are approximately 250 hotels in Recoleta. Great place to experience the Argentinian culture without engaging in self-defence techniques. As you know, Buenos Aires can pose some very real risks.

Even if you don't really care for the sport, try and attend a Pro Soccer game in the big stadium with one of the rivals playing. WOW! We went last May when we were there for doves and other birds, it was the craziest sports event I have seen. There are no NHL, CFL fans around here that are anywhere near as crazy as the average local down there. Try and get good seats with the home fans, it was very much worth attending! No booze for sale in the stadium or within a km of it, I was a little unhappy about it at first, but was glad there wasn't pretty quick, lol. When rival teams show up, they bus in about 5-8000 fans and they are seated in one protected section, they yell, sing, chant back and forth with the home fans the entire time. Nobody can leave for 30mins after the game is over, just so the visiting fans can get out, on their buses and out of dodge! Crazy, but so worth it.

just a heads up, EZE is the most corrupt airport in the world! you have to be on top of your game there. fisherman/hunters are the number one targets. be prepared for stuff to go missing. buena suerte!
