I have some moose antlers that I got after my grandad passed away. I am trying to date them. They have a red metal tag on the antlers themselves (65-19778) does this mean they were taken in 1965? 1977?

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks,

I presume this is a Alberta tag.

I would say the 65 is the year. Metal tags in the 70"s were color coded, which changed every year. I have one from 78 or 79 it is green. But no dash between the numbers.

Thats all I know.

Interesting to find out for sure. Don't remember what year we changed from metal tags to paper ones. I liked the metal ones. Lost a paper one dragging a mule deer out of the bush and had to go back and find it.

No problem. Glad I could help with the limited knowlege I remember. Not too many people on this forum are from Alberta. Cept me I guess.

Nice reminder of your grandpa.

All I caan remember is putting the tag number down in the wildlife certificate.
I remeber seeing the same type of tags on job sites where they used them to seal tag vales and such.
As far as I ever knew it was just a serial number unique to each particular tag!

Dang that rings a bell now. We had those Wildlife Certificates that ya put a postage stamp in for your tag. Don't remember what ya actually put on the critter though. Must of still been metal.

Could very well be. Just don't remember. Just remember trying to put on a new improved paper tag on a mulie in a snow storm. And cursing. Think they improved on those now though. Glue is better.
