Goiter? Hyperthyroidism If he was human, that's what one would suspect.

likely an old wound from an arrow got infected , now he cant eat.

So he's had that since at least 08, can't be most of the things mentioned so far, except perhaps an old wound as Jimboy says. It's the only thing that makes sense to me.

I'm just guessing of course. I really have no idea what would cause that.

It interesting for sure, and a bit disturbing. Nature can be hard at times.

Huh??? First of all the deer has had the injury or growth for over 3 years so it obviously can eat. What would lead to say it's "likely from an arrow". Nice way to throw a fellow group of hunters under the bus.

With livestock it's not uncommon to see lumps of scar tissue develop around an old abscess...and that's what it looks like to me. If somebody ever drops him I'd bet you'd find a rather solid mass of granulated tissue under his hide.

Blech. Hated draining big abscesses!

That makes the most sense of any of the suggestions.

I have encountered that sort of thing a few times in trapping. Not the sort that would be noticeable, but definitely old scar tissue that left a welt or bump.

Moosehorn,

I suggest you send this picture into F&W, this contact map will help you find the regional bio for your area.

While this deer is likely suffering from a non-infectous disease/condition, the possibility exists that the deer has a disease that my spread to other ungulates ( this could be Blue tongue/EHD), and possibly even to humans (Bovine Tuberculosis).

For the sake of the deer herd and people, it may be best to have this deer put down and necropsied.

his neck could get that way from rubbing it on a bail feeder or through a fence grabbing some eats
