Let me start out by saying I am a real crappy yote hunter. First season, first yote. Nuff said.
I got access to a new multiple section land parcel out east. Private land and the owners are real shady about giving access. Got myself in good with them and now have exclusive rights for yote and gophers out there. Anyway, I had been out about 5 times before trying to see what time of day was best, where they came from, how skittish they were… I head out this morning, and set up my stand. Hiding in nice tall grass, I had a clear view of my decoy 150 yards away. It’s shortly after 9:30 and I’m expecting more disappointment, as was normal for the past 5 visits.
My foxpro fury and decoy had just come in the mail, so I was excited to get out and try them. I modified by decoy to be controlled by the foxpro, so I was rather hopeful that this new combination would help me break Roadrunner’s virginity. Roadrunner is my Kimber 22-250.
4:33 minutes into my stand, a coyote starts popping through the field behind me. Hunched down in the grass, unbeknownst to the coyote, I got ready to make my first kill. He was running at full tilt towards my decoy. Time started to slow, and I could feel my heart beating a mile a minute. I calmed myself, lined up my crosshairs and let loose a hellish fury of jacketed hollow point towards him.
Two flops and a skid is all that happened next, and I still have a grin on my face.
For the rest of the day, the coyotes evaded me. Ignoring my calls and not taking notice to my decoys. More than 20 stands with nothing to show for it but this one kill. I’ll be going out tomorrow. Roadrunner and I are having a blast!
