I've been really enjoying the different photography threads on this forum.
How about starting a wildflower one?
Here's a favorite Alberta orchid - can you name it?

LOVE osteospermums, regardless of them being a domestic plant!

The shooting stars have long been one of my favorite wildflowers. I also have a weakness for wild blue flax. Keep 'em coming.

This weather keeps up and the crocuses and buffalo beans will be coming out :D

I figured I'd wait and see if someone else could identify it since, as you can see, I already knew what it was.

But here are a few I haven't been able to identify.

This first one is tiny, maybe two inches tall. I found it growing in dense forest among Bunchberries and such.

#1http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4131/4845219472_50567bdf0d_b_d.jpg

This next one was found growing at the edge of the pavement on hwy 35 north of Manning. The plant was about 8 inches tall and looked like a round mound of green with these little flowers poking out of it.

#2http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc278/KegRiver/Flowers/2007_07040225.jpg

This plant was growing in soggy ground at the edge of a dugout.

#3http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc278/KegRiver/Flowers/Unknownflower.jpg

Now to flower I do know, but hopefully ones that most do not recognize.
Let's see who can identify these.

#5http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4116/4813881430_357ebd37d6_b_d.jpg

#6 - this is not what you think it is - http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc278/KegRiver/Flowers/KidneyLeafedViolet.jpg

#12http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc278/KegRiver/flowers%202/2008_07030026.jpg

Almost all of these were taken with my old Point and shoot camera so the quality isn't that good.

You've got some tough ones there Keg, and I don't have my best reference books handy - but I'll have a go at them:
#1 The aptly named 'Twinflower'
#2 ??
#3 Western Meadow Rue?
#4 ??
#5 an orchid - either Rattlesnake Plantain or Northern Green Bog Orchid
#6 Kidney-leaved violet?
#7 is that a white Fireweed?
#8 ??
#9 some sort of saxifrage? - maybe Wedge-leaf saxifrage?
#10 some sort of Primrose?
#11 a Yellow Hawksbeard
#12 tremendous blooms! - Bog Orchid?

I think you may have #3, Seems right to me, thanks, that one has bugged me for years.

#5 is a Northern Green Bog Orchid

You got #6 and #7

#9 you missed

#10 you are on the right track, but not quiet there.

#11 you got

#12, not a orchid. It's a member of the Figwort family.

That first one is Calypso bulbosa.

You can find bumble bees carrying it's pollinia on it's back in the spring.

They look like paired little yellow kidneys.

Very cool.

What size of lenses are best for flower portraits?

I'll add some pics when I get home from slaying some monster burbs.

Ah - your #12 ia an Elephant-head flower!

Correct! They are also called Little Red Elephant.

And I was half asleep last night. I suspect you were as well because you said #11 was Yellow Hawksbeard and I agreed. But it is entirely different. It is Goats Beard.

The others are;

#2 unknown, possibly a member of the wild geranium family.

#4 Jacobs ladder

#8 Water Arum

#9 Grass of Parnassus

#10 Mealy Primrose

my second post, for the few who are just learning about wild flowers,
Are;

Water Smartweed
Wood Lily
Marsh Marigold
And, Wild Cranberry also known as Pembina Cranberry or High Bush Cranberry.

When I got my first Digital camera I set out to photograph all of the Flora and Fauna (wildlife, flowers, birds, ext.) of this region.

I soon discovered that when it came to Flowers and Mushrooms, I had noticed only a fraction of what was really around me.

These are some of the flowers I discovered thanks to the wonder of digital photography.

Wild Cranberry Tree, or Pembina Cranberry.

No I don't have any of the beardtongue family of flowers. They are more of prairie and subalpine family of plants.

I don't have any of the Alumroots for the same reason.

Yes the Cactus is from the Peace River area. In fact it was photographed on the hills overlooking the Peace River.
