YYC runway 16/34 is 12,675’ long

AN-225 requirements:
Runway required T/O 10,499’ at MTOW.
Runway required Ldg 10,499’ at MLW.

MAXIMUM TAKE-OFF WEIGHT IS AN ASTOUNDING 1,322,700 LBS

Lots enough runway length at YYC.
Runway length requirements vary on an aircraft subject to weight, temperature, elevation....etc.

"The" AN-225 is an amazing airplane...so are AN-124s We moved the greatest percentage of heavy cargo out of Kandahar (when we pulled out at the end of 2011) using AN-124s. Used our own C-17s to a lesser extent...

With absolutly nothing to back it up...

When I was a youth growing up in Calgry, I'd heard that the Calgry Internat Airport was an alternate landing site for the space shuttle.

As for runways, I miss my runways at Namao. Both runways with compaction standards that far exceeded what was needed to land a space shuttle.

The long runway was 147,000 feet

The Namao airstrips. Ripped up by former Liberal Anne McLellan and her henchman.

The Runway at Namao is still there it just happens that there is two regiments and a battalion on it now so not so good for landing.

Also if i recall correctly Calgary has the longest active runway in Canada. Heard it was built to compensate for high density altitude that can occur in the summer.

By golly that is really long.

I used to watch D10's with the back digger teeth trying to pry up those runways.

I do not know how much of that Namao runway has been ripped up but there are many people who think that wonderful piece of engineering should not have been torn up because there was a liberal MP in Edmonton and the Calgary folks were going to be punished by having the great PPLI moved out of your great city.

Does anyone else have more information on those Namao runways?

147,000 feet Yikes.

Thanks again Al.

Had a Ukrainian one at the Edmonton air show a few years back before the Garrison and it was still a Herc base.
Right after Ukraine went independent. The tires on it were like onion skins. Pretty darn scary. It had this weird titanium deck in the cargo area that sagged when you walked on it.

Are we going to see any Chinooks flying around Edmonton in the future?

I remember watching the Chinooks that were sold to the Dutch practicing with orange nets full of tires in the Redwater practice area.

1992 was more than a few years ago. I remember the floor being so flimsy too, and the hydraulic accumulators every 10 feet down the cargo hold filled with what looked like lemon aid.

At that airshow, there was some crazy guy who was caught trying to beat on the aircraft with a hammer.

Those Ukrainians stayed for nearly 2 months, and I remember buying the beers at the mess. When they did leave, we pumped in 2 and a half trucks of fuel, and it was not even close to being full.

My guess is that it depends on wind direction. They typically route traffic to land and take off into the wind. Assuming they will use the north/south runway, if the wind is coming from the south then their flight path should bring them in over Airdrie.

Wow, they're really getting around these days (as the Antonov always does). Just a few days ago we had it here in Hassi Messaoud, Algeria bringing in some oilfield equipment. Talk about an expensive hot shot (1/2 million for this one)!

I didn't get to see it though as I was stuck on the runway in Algiers for 3 hours before being told "we can't fly to Hassi because there's no room to park the plane"...at the time we all thought it was some usual BS excuse but looks like they were telling the truth this time!

I think JD might not be that far off... the guys that pilot those aircraft are known for being loose cannons...

they lit a BBQ on one of their flights...in the cargo compartment...

then in 2007:

On Jan. 15, CFB Trenton staff prevented the takeoff of an ice-covered IL-76 from Silk Way Airlines, based in Azerbaijan.

Capt. Richard Dumais, 8 Wing Trenton's deputy operations officer, wrote a one-page message to base operations staff, calling the Silk Way crew's behaviour "frankly foolish" and unprofessional.

"It is obvious that the IL-76 crews cannot be trusted when it comes to flight safety," wrote Dumais.

"As professionals we are to be sure that these cowboys of the sky will not jeopardize personnel safety on or off this base," he wrote. "Yesterday was a sad display of aviation intelligence ... We could have had an airline-size accident on our hands today."

Silk Way conducted an internal review; at the company's insistence, a copy of it was included in the DND's response to The Intelligencer information request.

It said the crew was suspended temporarily and would be given more training on flight regulations.

That year was really a big first for Russian aircraft. The AN 124 came over first, and brought over 2 MIG 29 aircraft and all their support equipment. Then the AN225 came over. It was really cool to see that stuff, and I got to look all over those aircraft.

Tough motherfreckers! Some time after that show, at a International winter Sarex I gave my leatherman to a russian pararescueman. He was absolutely fascinated with it. He made me take his pocket knife in exchange. I swear you can still smell herring on it! My Sartech partner (the infamous Jim B.) gave him several pairs of wool socks as he was jumping barefoot in his boots. Canadians would strap on a penetration kit or sarpel, the russian would strap on a doctor and jump with him! Good times! :)

Greylynx, I'm thinking a fire hydrant (if it is a huge hydrant!) with a "Lanny" would be a guy we called "Big G". Another legend! He use to take one last draw on his smoke and throw the butt out the back of the Herc then jump after it....
