Saw a flock of geese while working near Airdree this afternoon, do the geese stay somewhere all winter or is spring FINALLY here?

I have about 300 hanging out in a special spot as well as 200 ducks. Been here all year. Some never migrate.

I swore I heard geese flying overhead last night in Grande Prairie... Those big Canadas will return to their preferred nesting areas and stake claim to 'their' territory well before 'Spring'. I've seen the big 13.5 lb buggers sitting on a foot of ice in a frozen wetland as early as mid-March.

In the past 10 years or so, more and more ducks and geese are choosing to ride out winter further and further North. Survival instincts tell them that migration is dangerous so they rough it in Southern Alberta. Even more so then eating, their strongest instinct is their need to reproduce, and their success with this largely depends on attaining good nesting habitat. And, by wintering closer to the nesting grounds, they are more likely to get first crack at the choicest spots.

They are back in our area. S of Stettler. Pairs together. No flocks yet.
