Hey all,

Looking to put some glass on a 300WM.

I was wondering what level of magnification everyone uses. Right now I am looking at a 2.5-10.

Do you all think that will be sufficient?

I dont plan on making any shots over 300 yards.

That should be plenty I've used a 3-9 x40 on my 30-06 for years. None of my shots were over 300 yds

I run a 5.5-22x50 on mine, though I have thought about swapping over to a 2.5-10x24 if I use it for a sheep hunt. 5.5-22x50 might be overkill for 300yds but we seems to come across much further shots around here so I like the extra magnification

2.5-10x is about ideal.

Plenty of mag. You'd be fine with a straight 4x for hunting big game within 300 yards.

i use a fixed six power and its good for way over 300 yards. and its not too much for close shots.

of 4 of us that shoot 300wm, we all have Leupold 3.5-10x40's. Nothing wrong with a 3-9x40 or the 4-12x40 in the VX2 line.

Thanks for all of the replies everyone.

I was pretty confident that it would be enough before I made the thread, but this just seals the deal.

2.5-10, 3-9, 4-12 will all work fine. I had a 3x9 on my 300 and just put a 4-12 on it and I wont shoot anything past 400 yards.

I would put a 4-12 power on if you are planning on making shots up to but not beyond 300 yds. The largest scope i have is a 5-15 and i go up to 400 yds no problem anything further and the nut behind the wheel may fail.

It really depends on how you intend on using the rilfe.

If it is an all purpose hunting rifle where you have a maximum distance imposed by your own abilities or ethics system, you could very well get by with a 1-4x scope.

If you invision the rifle being used for cross coulee or canyon long bombing something like a 2.5-16 or a 3-10 might make more sense.

What ever you choose do not cheap out on the optics, or the mounting system.
Spend till it hurts, is a good way of knowing you've got good glass.
