For those who must forego the cabin fever blues and keep their canines in top form, Rob can definitely fill the bill. With the looming demise of the pheasant program in Alberta, this is the perfect perk for the upland connoisseur.

Here's the 'man with a plan':

Unfortunately Cat and company scarfed down all the blueberry desert but a great time was had and thanks to you Rob for sharing your time freely as well as your insights and expertise with dogs and bird rearing.

Cat they covered the whole ranch at least twice some pieces of cover more than that and could not find those chukars.
Even the pheasants got harder to find but at 75% they were right on the average and the doggies had a blast. Even Dougs 11 year old was still eager for more after 7+ hours.

On way back to ranch from picking up the mail I spotted a large group of hens in the ditch across from my driveway with at least 2 roosters strutting their stuff trying to impress the ladies. it is that time of year again. think they are already spreading out to claim nesting territory.

I'll be paying a visit in late August when the pup needs to have some birds bigger than pideons shot over him (5 weeks till pick up and the itch is terrible).

-4 for piling on

anyone notice anything on the YLF??
this is Casey one of my all time favorite dogs to work and train.

6 years old now, she just needed a tune up while the family is visiting in Utah and California.
Dog and handler are from Utah and he is a lefty. When he first contacted me about training he had started training and had read that the dog should be heeled on the left side to which I responded only if you are a right handed shooter. He shoots left handed so the dog has been trained to do everything on the right side instead of left.
Seemed awkward to me at first but now I am used to it as well.
Nice pictures Darryn, crisp!

3 more shoots until the end of the "shooting season" and then the hatching and brooding show begins the cycle all over again next month.

Skinnydipper.......thanks for the writeup. Sounds like a great time and your young lab is well on his way to great things. Thanks again for the offer of some pheasant meat the other night.

You finished the story off with your world class photography once again. Very nicely done and good that you got a day out in the field with your pup and some friends.

Congrats........Marco

I am a site sponsor so my ad appears in the online bird regs upper right corner.

Web site is http://whitewolfbirds.com

Guess it is up to each individual to decide if they can afford it but we had an AO special last winter for mixes of roosters and hens at $20. a bird to promote off season dog training.

We are east of Calgary near Langdon.
thanks

Better yet Robin, perhaps you could bring your dogs out and volunteer some time to the Junior Pheasant Program and realize the potential joy you can share with some youngsters that would not normally have such an opportunity. Just sayin'

Bring your "A" game if you do go this spring, WW's roosters just LOVE doin' the road runner thing, and when they get into the 'rushes they will drive a dog nutz trying to get them out!:)

i get paid to play hide and seek with the birds for the hunters.
Some dogs and hunters need it easy to build confidence and others want it as wild as we can manage. Ask the Ft Mac crew how hard it can be to find "pen raised critters" with good shooters and well trained dogs.

the birds have great instinct to know the guys with the guns walking down the fence lines with dogs are not a good thing.
You would be surprized how many of the ranked shooters (AA) and field trail trained dogs that find preserve birds more than just a challenge. In tough cover (like my 30 acre cat tail section Cat and Zippo are intimately familiar with) preserve birds can be just as wily as the wild roosters.

We have fun, see good dog work, try to correct the less than stellar work with suggestions for the handlers. Some good shooting, some good misses and a lot of laughs and comraderie.

many of our clients have become friends and hunting partners for waterfowl, big game or huns and sharptails(my passion over a dog).

Pretty hard to beat a day in the field with dogs and guns.
